It’s crazy how fast some of these guys are consistently. I’m pretty consistent myself with my laps being within a tenth or two of each other, but it’s not to say they are fast laps.
I enjoy seeing some of the top leaderboard guys in lobbies, and it’s kinda funny when they can’t hold their own in traffic or win because of their inconstancy, Totlxtc’s post is 100% true.
A thing that really helped me improving consistency was having some racing series with friends where we had 20 laps races. If you and friend (or more) post lap times that are very similar in the end it is consistency that matters. I used to prepare for the race by doing 20 laps tests in which I was trying to make as many laps as possible with times close to my PB in the car. Having also other players on the track is different, for sure, but this really helped me in the end.
you could use freeplay rather than test and have the traffic. and get credits paid for it.
yes by “test” actually I mean myself doing 20 laps in freeplay.
Usually I don’t put drivatars in the race because they cause too much troubles. For traffic nothing is as good as MP lobbies, which I really like, particularly A class and C class. Also the latest GT lobby is fun.
i find the faster i try to drive the more likely i am to make a mistake, the consistent guys know the track, know which gear for which corner, know the line in and out and that’s just track time, if your chasing another driver within your view you are likely to try to take that corner a little too fast trying to catch up where as you will catch up if your consistent, like the lap time demo above shows that you will catch the others when they are not on there hot lap then they are likely to push and make a mistake
I’ve spent the majority of my time with Forza in rivals. I’ve done my share of racing, but not really a whole lot. Well, last night I got to race against a couple of different guys who are vastly better than me. Oddly enough, I can beat many, if not most, of their times while hot lapping. That’s easy though cause its just one lap that you have to get right. Every time I get a good lap and move up on the leaderboards, that lap is recorded and it may look pretty good to some. However, nobody sees the 10 laps before that one that were just horrible. What impressed me about these guys is that they are just super consistent. Its like they are a machine and every lap is almost the same. Virtually no mistakes, nothing crazy, just methodically working their way around the track. I can be faster for one or two laps maybe, but I can’t put it all together like that for 4,5,6 laps. I’ve been puffing my chest out lately because I’ve been recording some half decent times, but I still have a long way to go…
Just a little dose of reality
i remember in forza 3 we had a league. and invited some of the top leaderboard guys in. they were wicked fast leaderboard guys. the first race we raced them their first few laps were insane but… by the 4th to 5th laps almost all of us smoked them. they had cars setup just for leaderboard times. and after a few laps their tunings were no good. they were not used to going 30-50laps. was fun… and after they got used to racing for 40+ laps they once again got crazy fast and pretty much shared their tunes with us. made for fun racing like a 2 hour nurburgring race haha
I’ve won a ton of race by simple getting a clean start and racing smooth, smooth, smooth!!! Racing and hot lapping are two diffrent but its good to do both.

The advantage of hotlapping and doing rivals is learning the tracks better and learning how to drive them and where the best passing zones are.

You have to remember, not everyone enjoys hotlapping. I HATE IT, I like to race.
A lot of times, those leaderboard times are set in a lobby, they don’t properly portray the drivers ability. What I find funny is that with all the wreckers and people seemingly using auto-braking…, I usually think to myself “Wow, some of you guys are really bad…”

It was nice meeting you online, Lou, although I don’t think this post is about me
Once you get the parts on your car right for the class or event you’re racing it all comes down to the tune and how well you control your car. I.E. braking and line’s you choose. The actual tune, ( not the parts ) plays such a huge role in this forza. I love it. You can run consistant 2:10.3xxx on road america play with a few settings and run high 2:08’s running the same lines. I cant speak for anyone else but I for one regret using the xbow to set some of my rivals times as I want to push my R32 skyline as high as I can get it on as many tracks as i can get. well in A class, i find it has the most variety of cars to race against. But keeping to the topic car control, using manual with clutch and doing your best to control wheel spin will net you fast times. Also… this could just be me… but running rivals could be making you run a lttle slower as well… with myself i run faster when im racing in a lobby, private or public, its more of a greyhound chasing the rabbit type of thing. I dont feel that push racing the clock or a ghost… it has to be someone… but like it said could just be me…
My approach to online racing is:
-
Know the track: this is the only CONSTANT - the track remains the same and predictable. Running Rivals is a great way of learnig the lines and brake/acceleration points as well as entry approaches. Also one will find (by accident) where the potential slippery curbs are. Downside to running the Rivals is that the driver is almost exclusively on the fastest racing line.
-
Know the car: there are FWD, FR, MR, RR, AWD + light/heavey weights, low/high power cars + myriad of variations. One has to know the characteristics of each car in order to be proficient in getting every ounce of performance out of them. This can only come from seat time. Hundreds of laps at each track will NO DOUBT bring car closer to being one with the driver. Then any subtle change in tuning can be felt. Driving without aids become easier because the driver knows exactly when/where the traction will be exceeded.
-
Know your limits: this, of course, is the greatest variable in the equation as well as the greatest strength. Knowing & ACKNOWLEDGING your limits then driving/racing accordingly is the greatest difficulty. You can be right on the edge of your limits for hot lapping but when there are other cars in close proximity, one must stay well within the limits to BE ABLE TO REACT quickly to developing situations.
I’ve only been racing since November, bought the XBox for the grandkids to play. I didn’t know how to turn it on or use the controller… So fast forward to today, I know how to tune a car fairly well and pretty much keep myself in the rivals section of the game as these races online are just too much of a smash-up derby. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve managed to get around someone without them deliberately wrecking me. Maybe I need to spend more time on, as it sounds like a lot of fun to race with good drivers, but so far I haven’t found them. I can’t say that I’ve given it allot of effort either, maybe 10 sorties or so, got fed up with it.
How do you find decent folk to run with? Is it just luck or is there a way to meet online? I can guarantee that if I had good drivers to run with, after 10 races or so, I’d be competitive. Wish I could find it, when I read these postings of folks racing side by side, or nose to tail, that’s what it’s supposed to be about. I can take anybody out in a turn, but I’d much rather him beat me on the outside of it than lose the car and wreck him from stupidity…

First step in the process of finding clean racers is to express your intent here. I’ll add you to my FL and send invites when we race. You can add me to your FL as well. Friday nights and Saturday afternoons is when I typically race online. Last Sunday night, there was an impromptu get together which was a lot of fun. Just need to have few of the clean racers in your list then ask to be included.
This is my First Forza Motorsports game as well. I have played other racing games in the past but nothing as serious as this. Consistency is by far what separates the great from the good. Im striving to get to the great section and i feel like im doing a good job but like most everybody else i lack consistency. Its fun racing with some of the names that have been said in here and from the posters as well because some of them can run the same time over and over again. It will be a challenge to cut the gap to those great racers but one i and many other look forward to! One day we will be there we just have to keep pushing!
