Rear View Mirror 5-12-14

Crazy wreck at Indy, amazing what a simple stall can do. Sounds like everyone got out ok.

As far as Hamilton and Mercedes go I am fine with it, eventually someone else will figure it out.

The side view mirror is interesting. By the mirror shape and mount I would guess Miata probably spec racing by the paint job. The thing that is confusing to me is the pillar which looks too angular and sharp to be a Miata. If I had to go by the pillar I would guess some angular 80’s car like a Golf, Horizon, Lotus, Toyota, etc… Judging just by the paint scheme I would say Abarth. Can’t wait to find out what it is.

I try to watch as much racing (namely Formula Drift) as I can via live streams, etc. Unfortunately most of the time this is not always possible, so I often have to resort to watching the recorded video-on-demand. But aside from drifting events, I don’t really watch too many other forms of auto racing. Not out of a lack of interest, but more so just due to a lack of time. I think I’d have to dedicate my life to racing in order to stay on top of things, and even then, I don’t think I’d be capable of doing so. There’s just so many different forms/categories to follow. So I’d definitely say that I do indeed count on you to highlight all of the need-to-know moments in racing. And as for watching real life racing on the same tracks featured in Forza Motorsport… I wholeheartedly agree. The familiarity of the tracks certainly makes the experience more engaging. However, I’d probably best describe the feeling as jealousy. And after seeing that smart car, I had to thoroughly wash my eyes out with bleach… I can’t see very well anymore. So I apologize for any spelling/grammatical errors.

In regards to F1, I’m liking the shift of power from Red Bull to Mercedes. I just hope Lewis Hamilton doesn’t dominate the rest of the season to the likes of Vettel the past couple of seasons. I like the underdogs getting their chance like Hulk, Sutil, and the young Magnusson. Also happy that Crashtor Maldonado was out early and didn’t take anybody with him. With 14 races left in the season, I think we’ll see some shake-ups on the podium, not just RBR and MB

Thanks

First of all, thank you John for this good read

The car on thumbnail I have no clue which one is, but I bet in a old MX5 Miata from the 90’s generation, or something like Suzuki Capuccino or any “lady” convertible type.

I watch racing everytime I can, but my love is on GT Racing, no matter if ADAC GT Masters, Blancpain, TUDOR etc. I live 50 minutes of bus/15 with car from the racing track here @ Curitiba/Brazil, but I didn’t went in there this year if I remember well.

I started to watch the Spanish GP of Formula 1 but I had 2 problems: One is that I hate Catalunya circuit, never like to race on it and never liked to watch a race in there, the same goes to Hockenheim haha, the second thing is that I don’t remember why I TRULLY stopped to watch the race, as I love F1 and watch all the races, despite the good and bad circuits lol. I think that looks obvious that either Hamilton or Rosberg will be the champion this year, for what looks like no other team will have a competitive car against the Mercedes’, but what would be great is all the teams with good chances, bettet saying, to see “all hell’s breaking loose” (or “ver o circo pegar fogo” in a similar expression on brazilian portuguese). My favorite races are of course @ Monaco, Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps), Brazil (Interlagos), Canada, Monza and Abu Dhabi, most because of the tracks.

How amazing is to see Indy Car racing in the same layout that Formula 1 raced before? Would love to compare the lap times! Anyway, whats up with almost all Indy races being in the end of the evening?

DANG on that BMW crash @ BTCC, the driver went to enjoy the nature around the circuit :D, those Hondas (both models) are great, but the Focus is the most suitable in my eyes

Your feeling with that Smart Fortwo (that car on drag straight looks like an FLYING EGG) is the same as I have for the Nascar cars, especially when I compare the Nascar Camaro to the real sick-sexy-and-awesome Camaro GT3 made by Reiter (that is outstanding GT car) hahahaha

Cheers!

I try to watch NASCAR live every week, was glad to see Gordon get a win. I’m not an F1 fan or a drift one either. I count on your RVM’s to keep me up to date so thanks! The car mirror has me stumped. Thanks again for the RVM,John.

I watch the WTCC, cant watch the BTCC at the TV, I like touring car race because there is a lot of fight to keep public in suspense and the rules of this championship with the weight in the faster cars.
I’m not very intersted by the F1, I prefere touring cars or WRC. I watch in priority the moto GP championship. Amazing Marquez…
Who can beat him ?? Sometimes there is always the same who win (like Marquez or mercedes now) and I think it’s not good for the spectacle if it’s too long, it come quickly boring.

I will watch most motor racing out there. NEVER WATCH NASCAR! F1 is by far the best regular racing series aired in the US. Indy is a close second and the last racing series in US is the tudor championship. I watch the races when I can, but work on weekends doesn’t always allow that. I did catch the tail end of Spain this week. I agree, I really don’t like Merc dominating week in and week out. Monaco (put in FM5 please) in two weeks should be good. There are a few other tracks I want to see in FM5 that are on the F1 and Indy calendars. Still waiting for more tracks in FM5.

FM4 unicorns I want are the two Lambos please.

Absolutely agree. I haven’t watched Formula 1 in years but I put on qualifying while i did some dishes Saturday morning. I immediately recognized the track as Catalunya, which is one of my personal favorites in Forza. I loved watching the in-car view of the drivers taking the turns I’ve taken, albeit virtually, so many times.

Wish there were more of a race-day feel in Forza as there is at a real life Grand Prix!

Hey there John, thanks again for another great RVM! I don’t have any sort of television service (not even rabbit ears!) so you are my one and only source of racing news!

I do have to agree that I absolutely love watching races on tracks that are featured in Forza. It kind of makes it easier for me to be invested when I realize how hard some of the sections of track are. Sometimes I find myself instinctively turning my head to brace for Gs as I watch :stuck_out_tongue:

Watching that IndyCar stuff is always exhilirating and frightening. It’s like one wrong move and you might be dead… At least that’s what it looks like when the cars flip all over the place. I can’t imagine how mentally taxing it must be driving those things.

I really liked that BMW driven by Turkington in the BTCC. Usually I’d go with a Japanese ride but I just liked the look of the Beamer.

I wanna do that to my smart in FM4! Haha I love the idea of turning one car into something completely (ridiculously) different.

So once again, thanks for another great RVM sir. See you tomorrow for HMA.

I try to watch F1 as much as possible, but living on the west coast of the US makes it a little tough having to wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning to catch the race. Le Mans is the only thing I watch consistently from start to finish.

^The TUDOR USC - Prototype and GTLM race broadcast. It’s a good one. Battles everywhere and the P2 machines took on the DP’s in the Prototype class and the GT class was an excellent race as it always is… I won’t spoil the results -

But there was a major battle waging between the #42 LMP2 car and #90 Daytona Prototype - It started with Yacaman driving around the outside of Andretti turn from 4th to second placa and Valiante taking 1st from Ed Brown in the 02 Tequilla Patron… Yacaman is not known for being very patient and he dogged the #90 for many laps with contact happening here an there. The strength and weakness of the P2 and DP prototypes were on display for all to see. After the 1st pits the drivers changed but the battle resumed until contact between the two cars created a chain event taking the Mazda Diesel Prototype out at the corkscrew 40 minutes into the race.

The GTLM battle was terrific. The #3 Corvette took the lead early off but after pits the order changed around a bit. Due to pit strategy and fresher tires, Auberlin in the #55 BMW Z4 GTE car ran some terrific laps gaining 3 track position in the final laps and setting a new lap record of 1:23.195 The battle between him and Porsche should not be missed…

Brundle powered the #42 Oak Racing LMP2 to a new race lap record of 1:19.747 as well. It was spectacular race and while they didn’t have all four classes on the track at the same time- I like what they did it made Mazda Leguna Seca into a sprint.

All that said I am really unhappy with the TV/ Online view of the new series - I don’t have Fox Sport 1 and I really miss Hindhaugh and Jeremy Shaw. I miss being able to watch the races live on ESPN3 - now I have to wait till the Monday or Tuesday after the race to watch which is almost unforgivable to me. Why can’t they live steam the race broadcast - commercials and all I really miss the ALMS in that regard. But there is no fault to find in the racing -The BOP between the LMP2 and the DP is coming along and the GT racing is terrific as always especially for a die hard Corvette fan. The Viper seemed a bit out of sorts. BMW had some miscues but brilliant strategy as always and the beleaguered Risi team came back and almost got a podium and after their season so far it would have been a much deserved.

I agree with you, TIGER, The F1 lost it’s spirit.
In Senna time, we had almost no technology, and the human factor were really challenged until the limit! That was the golden F1 years…
Talking about this, last week we had 20 years of Ayrton Senna R.I.P. I think we could have a tribute for that hero!

Awesome read, always love reading the RVM threads are there are so many passionate motorsport enthusiasts. Its all fair enough to say Formula One has lost its spirit and stuff like this but we all need to remember that F1 is known for its cutting edge technology. Everyone has to give them a break, they are trying techniques and new strategies that no one has ever heard. I agree that the noise is disgusting and a disgrace but the teams are doing all they can with the limited time frame they have to not only drastically improve their cars to catch Mercedes but to also meet everyones demands. That Smart Car doe!!! That thing was a weapon for sure and the WRC was as entertaining as ever!! Fantastic article
