Nice work Johni…
It was a welcome return back for the F1 this weekend, I myself was on ‘in-law’ duty and accompanied my wife down into what I consider the bowels of the devil……my ‘in-laws’ Ferrari shrine/home on the south coast. Being a Mercedes supporter I’ve been well versed in putting up with the constant teasing and jokes from the family tifosi over the years, this weekend the tide turned!!
For us in the UK it’s a really early start (6am lights out) for the traditional season opener in Melbourne, personally I quite like crashing out on the sofa with all the live timing around me and enjoying it whilst the rest of the country is sleeping off the effects of a Saturday night. I watched the race with my father in law and we had very mixed opinions on whether we liked what we saw.
First of all the sporting action was exciting, irrespective of the politics and all the change, when the cars hit the track we got treated to some great action. For me the standout guy was Bottas, he was outstanding considering last year his car was only good for being lapped. When he clipped the wall early on my heart sunk, I’m not a Williams fan but the way he was terrorising those Ferrari’s in front was making my father in law very nervous and I was internally willing Bottas on, it was thrilling seeing him coming back up through the pack. When Hamilton got pole I had the inevitable sinking feeling he wouldn’t win, it was no surprise to see Rosberg effectively cruise past him at the start, stealing from us the chance to see a decent fight for the lead.
As for the new sights and sounds, I’m a big fan……yes you read that right. I’ve often thought the V8 engine note at 18,000 rpm (i.e. last year) sounded unnecessarily loud and flashy for the sake of it, and in Fm5 it drives me up the wall. I love being able to hear all the energy recovery systems kicking in, the enhanced clarity of the downshifts, team radio is finally intelligible, the turbo kicking in….I just love it all. The V8 engine was impressive in the flesh (it always sounded to whiney on TV imo) but it did mask so much more that was going on. Also it was nice for the topic of discussion to not be tires, tires, tires, I bet Pirelli breathed a sigh of relief. For my father in law (no doubt influenced by an average result for Ferrari) he thought F1 was broken and has been ruined.
I felt sorry for Ricciardo being disqualified, but zero sympathy for Red Bull. They along with other teams got warned about the fuel sensor problems but they choose to ignore it and carry on, this time they pushed their luck too far.
I didn’t get chance to see any of Sebring, I was in an ‘F1 only’ household and they wouldn’t let me stream it (they have a stingy internet package), I have it back at home recorded, I’ll make my way through it over the next week. Somebody up thread mentioned about the Porsche driver dominance, that’s not by chance at all. Porsche have a strong ethic in developing factory drivers and invest lots of time and effort into them, it really helps them get best out of every driver line up.
Now my own Forza racing took a turn for the worst this week……my 2nd TX wheel died in a month, so I’m back to the merry go round of the Amazon returns department again.
