I was so inspired by Neonpig’s thread on rat-look paints that I decided to have a go.
I’ve started and deleted about four designs before starting this one. (finding the matt paint option in special paints helped a lot lol)
It seems to be moving in the right direction and I’m fairly pleased with how its coming along.
Have a look, I’m not happy with the black translucent overlay. I’m really struggling to get the effect I want. This type of livery is HARD! :s

The XR2s looking good , i like the scrapes, dirt and tape . Like Pilotviper says you could add some rust around the edges of panels, arches etc. I make the rust using black or brown “paint splat” decals and use them small to build up bigger areas so the rust doesn’t look too uniform. I was asked how i did mine in the Horizon forum, maybe this will help….
As well as the darker shades you’ve added you could also add lighter reds/orange on the upper areas where the paint would have faded. Or maybe decal up a whole body panel in a different colour (carefully following the shape of the panel/along the actual body seams etc). If you don’t want it too ratty it can just be in a different shade of red.
I wouldn’t worry about deleting designs , i have loads of designs I’ve abandoned - i don’t delete them as i often revisit them weeks later and i can then see what didn’t look right. Then i can rework the designs using the decals that did work and not have to start from scratch again!
