I live in the stix with horrible satellite internet that has huge latency issues due to the path my signal takes. Any page request goes from a dish in my yard to a satellite, back to a ground station and then to the internet and the return goes the same route in reverse. There is no hard wire access where I live and no other way around it.
What I was wondering is can I tether my Xbone to my phone wifi and get decent access to online racing?
Also anyone have an idea of how much data is transmitted as I have a data cap that I dont want to blow. I barely make a dent in it as it is.
Just wondering if anyone else is doing this before I spring for a Gold card to try it and/or blow all my phone data and wind up with a $1000 phone bill for all the data usage.
Your quality of online play would be dependent on the 4G (don’t even bother with 3G) signal your phone gets. You can test this out by trying to stream high definition videos on your phone. If your 4G signal isn’t consistent or decently fast, you’re not gonna be able to game online very well.
That said, you are going to rack up data costs insanely quickly doing this, so you would have to have a seriously limited amount of play time each month.
I suspected it wouldnt be viable for me. We only get 3g and I dont want to spring for a huge data plan either. I guess its just me and the AI duking it out till i move out of the stix.
I’m just in a bad area. 3 miles up the road is point to point wireless and 5 miles to dsl or cable. When i moved here there was no such thing as broadband though. Best thing going then was ISDN and we couldnt get that either.
I live in a rural area that fortunately has a good AT&T signal. I almost never have lag and use it constantly racing with Forza. There are no problems using it at all. The down side is I carry a 60GB plan per month and it can be expensive. I did catch them when they ran a promo doubling data so I’m only actually paying for a 30gig plan. I’ve been trying out T-mobile this last month because they have a really good plan going on with tethering but the signal is not as good and online racing can be hit and miss. I am using a signal booster provider by them which helps, but the tower is just a bit to far away and it doesn’t compare to Att where I live at this time. Hope this helps and if you run into me in a lobby, usually B class, I’ll be tethering.
I’m AT&T but on a 30 gig plan with 3g still. Are you racing everyday to use so much data?
I may wait awhile and get a better feel for FM6 and learn some of the new tracks before buying a month of Gold and check it out. I just upgraded to the XbOne the other day.
I haven’t even got my FM6 yet. Its on a FedEx van on its way to me so I’ve been banging around in Horizon 2 for the time being. Walmart had FM6 on sale for <$40 but not in stock local so I had to order it. I’m doing really good as I picked up my Xbone used with Horizon 2 and then FM6 and still haven’t spent $250 bucks. I looked at his stats in Horizon and the guy had only played less than 2hrs and completed 1 race. Its like new.
I don’t use 60gb a month, we use that for the whole family. I usually burn through 20-30gb for the Xbox and the other internet for the month. Ask AT&T if they have signal booster they can send you, there are 2 kinds and the one you need is not the one that has to hook up through a home internet connection. Not sure AT&T has this kind, T-mobile does, so it’s worth asking AT&T if they do also.
I made sure to set mine to manual updates. I’ve already been down that road with a Windows 10 tablet and their constant stream of daily updates.
On a brighter note Fed Ex delivered my FM6 and I got to try it last night. Its beautiful! The graphics are worth the price of admission alone. Also seems very playable. May be awhile before I get online with it though as no one would really want to race with me just yet. I’m getting on the podium but its not pretty.
So far I’m liking FM6 but its going to take some getting used to over FM4. I really miss my huge stable of finely tuned cars that I have acquired. I also miss the $70 million I have in that bank too!
Good timing for me though as rain is forecast all weekend here so I’m going to spend that time grinding through races on the new tracks and building up the treasury so I can get some cars and figure out the new tuning. Seems similar to Horizon 2 but I just bought and drove them mostly stock in that game.
I will bring my Xbox to my parents house if there is a big update to save on data. And will hot lap instead of racing online if I start getting close to my data cap. Just being connected doesn’t take a lot of data.
I just plugged in and both FM and H2 need huge updates. I have a friend in town with a fast cable connect I’ll be visiting tomorrow. I also get a 10th anniversary car pack coming so that will be nice too.
Still adjusting to how different everything is compared to FM4. Getting lost on the Ring!
Another problem is you can’t change your NAT setting which makes it hard to connect to certain people. My old hot was strict and fortunately Im now moderate.
Your Xbox One can tell you how much bandwidth you’ve used. Go to Settings —> Network —> Bandwidth Usage.
You’ll be able to see how much Internet bandwidth your Xbox One console has used monthly over the last year, each hour for the last day and also how much it’s using currently. Obviously, as it’s new for you there won’t be much there yet, but you can use it to keep an eye on the total as it rises.
I used to use 3g. It worked, but sometimes lag could get really bad depending on how busy the network was and signal strength. Stick to ghosted lobbies and see how it goes I say.
