Me and my friend are trying to do a race does he have to be in the same session as me like if im in summer and hes in autumn then we can’t do a summer race? Is that how it works?

Sounds like your friend are still in the tutorial, when someone still trying to complete that you can only join his session. Because he haven’t unlocked everything yet.
You should both be in the same season
If you are in different seasons then that means one of you hasn’t finished the prologue, Finish that first and you will have no worries.
