How does Xbox Play Anywhere work?
When you buy an Xbox Play Anywhere digital game through the Xbox Store or the Windows Store [or via a digital code at participating retailers], it’s yours to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC at no additional cost. To take advantage of Xbox Play Anywhere, you will need to have installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition update on your PC, as well as the latest update on your Xbox One console. Then, simply log into your Xbox Live/Microsoft account and your Xbox Play Anywhere games will be available to download.

Does Xbox Play Anywhere cost extra?
No, there is no additional cost for Xbox Play Anywhere. When you buy an Xbox Play Anywhere digital game, the ability to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC is included at no additional charge.

Can I be signed into the same game on Xbox One and my Windows 10 PC?
At any single point in time, you may only sign into the game on one Xbox One console or one Windows 10 PC. You cannot be signed into the same game on both an Xbox One console and a Windows 10 PC at the same time.

Will my game progress be saved on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs?
Yes. When you play an Xbox Play Anywhere game, your game progress is saved on Xbox Live. So, you can pick up where you left off on another Xbox One or Windows 10 PC, bringing all your saves, game add-ons, and achievements with you.

Will downloadable content for Xbox Play Anywhere games also be playable on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC?
Yes. Downloadable content that you buy or earn for an Xbox Play Anywhere game that you own will also be playable on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. This includes game add-ons, Season Passes, consumables and in-game unlocks.

Will I earn Gamerscore and Achievements twice if I play the game on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC?
A single shared set of Gamerscore and Achievements will be earned and awarded for Xbox Play Anywhere games.

Are Xbox Play Anywhere games digital only or also disc games?
Xbox Play Anywhere only applies to digital games. Xbox Play Anywhere games can be purchased in the Xbox Store, the Windows Store, or via a digital code at participating retailers.

Forum questions and additional info

Accounts: The official FAQ does not seem to address sharing across accounts, but it would appear that the free PC version with Play Anywhere is only available to the account that purchased the digital version.

Q: If you purchase a Windows Store version after having played a disc version on the console, will paid DLC connect between the two? Per the FAQ, previously purchased DLC should be available on both platforms since DLC is tied to your Microsoft account.

Q: Can I play on PC if I don’t own an Xbox? Yes. To do this purchase the game through the Xbox App for Windows or Windows Store app (microsoft.com) or even a retailer that sells the digital code version of the game. To manage pre-order and installation in the Windows Store, and to play on PC, you will need to install the Windows Anniversary Update.

Hi,

Is PC version free only for those who purchase digital version from Xbox store, or is there some redeemable code with disc version? I prefer buying disc versions (I like actually owning games physically rather than digital version) and I would like to play horizon 3 on PC, but it really sucks if I’d have to buy PC version separately.

Are you sure about that? Because this statement kind of contradicts this one:

I assume that the DLC included with the Ultimate Edition will be in form of redeemable codes. After you use them, the addons should be tied to your account and be accessible from both the console and PC. It’d be nice if someone clarified this one.

According to the infos of amazon.com you can play with the disc version on PC too.

“Supports Xbox Play Anywhere: yours to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC at no additional cost.”

But Microsoft says no, you can’t on their site.

“Xbox Play Anywhere only applies to digital games. Xbox Play Anywhere games can be purchased in the Xbox Store, the Windows Store, or via a digital code at participating retailers.”

Would be good to have official confirmation of this, as when you buy through the xbox.com it says that only digital is crossbuy.
I too would prefer the physical version if I can also use it on PC.

Please see the updated post above ^^

Everything I read stays with the digital download is on both platforms and the physical copy is Xbox only. I would not trust Amazon as a reliable source for this kind of information as they have no responsibility for incorrect information.

Yeah, that’s what I thought before I started a chat with Amazon, but I did it anyway.

It would be nice to get some solid confirmation from T10 or MS directly. MS just released this information yesterday so the odds that Amazon support has definitive information this early is unlikely. Still, I’m hyped up and want to get a pre order secured lol.

If I download horizon 3 on Xbox, and I sign in to the Xbox app on my pc can I play anywhere? I use the same account for Xbox one and the Xbox app on of, but I sign in on to my computer on a different Microsoft account, will it still work on cross play?

I do not think this has been totally confirmed, but I would guess yes since you share the digital copy between profiles (I think but I’m not 100% sure because I always get actual disks, but I would not see why it wouldn’t be that way). What is confirmed, however, is that you cannot do the Play Anywhere option if you get the Disk. You have to purchase digital for that to work.

If your Email account on windows 10 is your xbox live email (master email account on the PC) then yes. I accidentally tried this and yes is works. Just like my home xbox feature on xbox one

The Amazon page has updated again and the physical and digital editions now have separate descriptions. Mention of Xbox Play Anywhere is now absent from both the standard and ultimate physical editions. It still remains with the digital editions though.

Now, my email is the same on my xbox live account, and on the xbox app on my pc, but to sign in i use a different one, is this okay?

once its downloaded on your PC its good, im not even logged in now and I could play killer instinct on my PC which i bought on box

Since the digital game is available in the Cross Buy offer (buy once and you can play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC), I’ve got two questions.

  1. Will the future DLC be “cross-buyable” as well? Can I buy an addon once and enjoy it on both platforms?

  2. If I preorder the retail version of the Ultimate edition, and then - after some time - buy the standard PC digital version*, will I have an access to the Car Pass and VIP membership content?

  • The reason why I want to do this is a bit complicated  I prefer physical copies over digital versions. I also don’t currently own a PC powerful enough to run the game, but I will in the future. So now I want to enjoy Forza Horizon 3 on my Xbox One console, and when the time comes, move on to the PC version.

Will I need to buy a copy for PC and a copy for Xbox One or will I be able to play on both systems with one copy?

Buying a digital (emphasis on that - digital) copy on Xbox will get you a free copy on the Windows 10 Store, that much is certain. I imagine it also works the other way round.

I expect the deciding factor will be what account you use for the Windows Store with Windows 10, since that’s where you’ll be downloading your PC copy from.

I’d like to think that this is the case based on how the Windows Store handles universal apps for Windows and Mobile; if you buy DLC for an app on Windows Phone said DLC also unlocks for the PC app and vice versa.

Fingers crossed when the Xbox and Windows stores merge, DLC for the game will work the same way.
