There needs to be a way to have penalties served during the race. Other games have a section where your car is slowed for the amount of seconds every lap. The car is ghosted so it cannot be hit while serving the penalty.
If that is not possible for this game, maybe you can tack the penalty time on during a pit stop. That way, if a penalty is earned before the stop, it gets served before the end of the race. If it’s after a stop, then the time gets added at the end.
Obviously, this would not work on short races, but I believe if racers have to serve their penalties immediately, it will cut down on the dirty driving.
Also a fix. I’m getting absurd penalties for very little mistakes that doesn’t need any penalty or getting penalties because of other peoples faults…

Yes, serving penalties during the race would be much more effective IMO. There will be unfair results at times, but to me, mid pack dealing with bumper cars, I feel like it would help a lot.
Edit: And leave single-player as a time-penalty for the end of the race, so offline we can still mess with the computer drivers.
Penalty time added to pitstop is the most elegant solution, and if the driver doesn’t stop it gets added at the end of the race time like usual.
I believe this would be the best solution. And on longer endurance races most of the time you would have to make a pit stop or 2 anyway so it would just add your penalty time on to your pit stop. In the end of the race you could still have a good battle for a position finish without worrying about being so many seconds ahead just to get that position due to penalties. And if the devs want to get real ambitious they could add a drive through penalty as well like in real life where you go through pit lane slow like normal but you dont have to stop.
Serving penalties in the pit lane is simple and elegant. I’d love that.
What about also adding an incentive to serving it in the pit lane as well? Like if you have 2 seconds of penalty, it’s a 1 second penalty in the pit. To incentivize actually serving it and balance the time spent in there
I worry this would miss the mark for deterring bad behavior, unless the penalty pitstop is mandated within a certain number of laps?
I think slowdown and ghost could be the most simple and fair to implement, as there’s already a system to ghost and for AI to take over control when pausing.
Slowdown would work to deter bad drivers, and fairly serve the penalty even when using a no-pitstop strategy.
