Painting Tips from Pro Painters!

Hello Pro Painters!

I downloaded an inspiring paint-job for my Sterling Moss and I decided to paint cars. To make a long story short, I suck at it.
Is there anyone that could give me information, tips, and advice on painting?

My advice would be to just keep practicing. The best painters out there are self taught… just keep plugging away and eventually you’ll
notice an improvement. It takes time but it’s worth it in the end. Good luck!

My advice would be to follow heaps of painters threads and be sure to look through their WIP (work in progress) pics to see how they create, bodykits and effects on the cars etc. Then have a go yourself. You will only improve by doing it. Practice, practice, practice!

Head over to YouTube first. There are a bunch of painting tutorial videos, as well as some really impressive time lapse videos of people creating really detailed images on cars. While I may never reach that level, it could help to make some of the simpler designs I have in mind.

Everyone has their method to how they paint. There is not one correct way to do it and don’t expect it to be perfect the first few times. I have a combination of methods I use to create paints and logos.

  1. Time & Practice: This is what you will hear from just about everyone. The more you work at it, the better you get.
  2. Buy & Trace: In the very beginning, I bought logos and traced over them to get a feel of the shapes to see if I could match the original design. I still do this from time to time.
  3. Google: I use search engines to find what ever I am looking for. I made of list of logos and designs that was interesting me and created them one by one.
  4. Everything is a Shape: I visualize logos and designs into simple shapes. I try to design something using a few shapes a necessary. Why use ten shapes when five will suffice.

The shapes thing could not be stressed enough. Just go around town and look at various every day logos as combinations of shapes. Also what I would suggest for you to do is to keep practicing. That is the sure fire way to get as good as possible. Also push yourself not to use stock fonts and logos. Good luck mate!
