Is there just not that many people playing the game anymore or is it my connection? Depending on what type of racing you pick, there probably isn’t that many people on if you end up in your own lobby. I thought it told you somewhere how many people were racing in that group. Try the Custom Public Lobbies. You can see how many are in each lobby. Try connecting to one with a few players and see what happens.
that sounds like a problem with your connection. Maybe your NAT setting is strict. This will cause big problems playing online
