Not sure I understand the driving mechanics of this game

  1. I use assisted braking because I am not that good. The assisted braking way over brakes, sometimes is slows me down to a crawl. If I run a little off the road it slows me way down while other cars that are off the road are picking up speed. Is there an adjustment for this?

  2. Some races I have the fastest top end speed car running. At top speed on a straight away some cars blow by me like I am standing still. This is physically impossible no matter what difficulty level you are running the game at. A car can only go as fast as it was built to go. What am I missing?

  3. I play on above average difficulty, Other cars seem to slam into me from behind some stop right in front of me. I have read were people have said that at the higher difficulty levels the cars stop doing this. That makes no sense. If a am playing at a lower difficulty level it’s because I am not that good, and if I’m not that good the game should make it easier on me not more difficult. Right?

  4. I must say though this is the GREATEST racing game I have ever played.

Thank you

Turn assisted braking off but leave ABS on, then leave the racing line on. When you come to a corner it will change from green to yellow and then red, start braking when you get to yellow at first then progress to braking when it’s red, before you know it you will be braking without looking at the lines.

As for the other stuff I haven’t got a clue but I sure someone else will

We all started somewhere!

Word of advice, push yourself to practice not using any assists… No STM, TCS, ABS… It pushes you to be a better driver, and ultimately become faster. Happy racing!

Turn off all the assists! I started in Forza in Dec of 2013 and I started with no assists at all. For steering use simulation. For shifting use manual (without clutch, as there is no advantage to using clutch in the game and by using manual w/o clutch you allow the cars electronics to shift the clutch in a more efficient manner). Yes, you’ll cuss kick and scream when you have all of the assists off, but in a few months according to how often you play, you’ll be rewarded. Use very gentle input, slow down and downshift to 2nd gear for most corners, and squeeze gently for brakes instead of slamming on it. This is a driving simulator and you have to treat it as such. You have to creep before you can walk! This is not game where you just jump in with male hubris and start winning, you have to learn to respect and master the game’s physics, and by doing so you improve daily. FM6 is much harder than FM5 so be patient and just learn the game. I hope the following article helps…it sure did help me after I followed all the suggestions!!! I sure wish most people in these forums read it, cause most people cannot drive in the game…it’s really sad indeed. Never mind it’s about 5, the same inputs apply to 6 as to 5!!! Real the whole article and apply all of it!!! Thank me later!!

I guess that if cars pass you on a straight it is because they had better cornerexit. Taking corners in right manner is where you gain better laptimes. Finish your braking before corner so you can hit apex at right speed and entrypoint. So start with rolling into corner and normally, when you hit apex midcorner, you apply throttle. Finishing braking before also shifts the cars weight better for cornering. Hope this helps.

If you are “not that good” just drive slower. Turn assists off and drive slower. You’ll learn a lot faster coming up to speed than relying on the “simulation” to correct mistakes. I even find ABS is wonky as it sometimes kicks in before a lock-up. Strange stuff. But, yes, ABS is “ok” but better to learn the delicate roll on/roll off of brake and throttle needed for top speed.

I find the assists in the game are really for those who believe throttle and brake are on/off switches. This isn’t the case and it isn’t fast.

If cars are slamming into the back of you it’s because you’re braking earlier than the Drivitar. So, while higher difficulties may help eliminate things like turn 1 demolition derby, those drivers are still driving their fastest lap and they do not expect the car ahead to be braking hard well in front of the braking zone. Use the rearview and move over

One other thing I just found out yesterday… some tracks I cannot get to my top speed even with silly long straights. I had to actually rebuild the gearing of my car before I was able to keep-up with the other Drivitars in the straights. This had nothing to do with last turn exit speed. I was literally pegged at red line in 6th gear watching everyone drive away from me until I tuned the gearing for that track. What the car said it could do vs. what it was doing did not match. Good luck with that.

  1. Turn off brake assist. Of all of the assists, this is the one that will prevent you from ever getting good at the game. Races are won by using the proper braking going into the corners. If you’re not that good, then just focus on braking early and slow down more than you think you need to at first. You will pick it up quickly and your lap times will improve tremendously.

I disagree with the person above who said to use simulation steering. Unless you are using a wheel, there is no reason to use simulation.

  1. Momentum. Just because you have the fastest car does not mean you will be the fastest on the straights. Your exit speed is very critical. Often cars with better handling will be faster on the straights because they slow down less going into a corner, carry more speed through the corner, and can get back on the throttle sooner.

Another factor is acceleration. On most tracks, acceleration is far more of a factor then top speed. Most straights aren’t long enough for you to reach your top speed anyway.

  1. I have no help for you here. I think the drivatars drive terribly in the game. I play on unbeatable level and they still do what you’re talking about.

Get away from the career mode for a while. Go run rivals or race in lobbies. It will help you improve far quicker…

Cowboy is on point…

The only thing I would add is that in a few months when you get the proper hang of it then your next step is to learn to build and tune cars… But for right now the fundamentals are within the few lines of text above… including his opinion on simulation steering (do not use unless you have a wheel).

I would also suggest to wean yourself from abs braking as well by learning how to gradually squeeze the triggers… You will need to learn to do this for both the gas and brake in order for you to turn the assists off (abs / tcs / stability control).
I also suggest manual with clutch and you can get the clutch right next to the shift buttons by swapping the handbrake and clutch buttons on the controller.

Its going to feel somewhat odd at first however if you are committed to learning the tracks and getting up to speed in this game then those are some of the fundamentals that have to happen.

Cheers

I would like to thank everyone for their advice.

Make sure you read the article link I posted above - please!!!

Not only did I read it, I printed it out.
Thank you again

As others have said, approach things differently. Reduce driving assists and lower AI difficulty to the point where you’re actually racing them. As you get quicker increase the AI difficulty. Running things like assisted braking against Pro or unbeatable AI would be horrible

Always do your major braking in a straight line, not in the turn, you can learn trail braking for that later. You can’t get on the brakes hard in a turn so try to do it in a straight line. I agree with turning off the assisted braking, its useless as for the others wean off as neededbut use normal steering if using a controller. We were all new at one time so don’t feel bad you will get there and we all are not aliens like some top drivers and never will be but that’s ok,its all about enjoyment my friend!!

Also note that the AI in singleplayer is very broken and way too difficult for the easiest difficulty settings. Try setting the AI difficulty to ‘new player’, normally any player should win very easy but in this game it’s so broken you often don’t even finish in the top 3. The majority of the pack is easy to beat and has the right difficulty behaviour but the top 3-5-ish cars are from your friends list and just ignore the difficulty setting (or so it seems to be).

Sorry my friend but I have to disagree. In fact, the AI in this game is the best it’s ever been in a Forza title. Yes, they can be frustrating at times, but no game can ever truly mimic human behavior and responses. I’ve been racing on above average and the AI has been challenging but not unbeatable, and I have some VERY fast guys in the Forza world on my friends list.

Please never use assisted braking and assisted steering. Turn on all other assists if you have too and put the drivatars on the lowest difficulty, but don’t use those two assists. They will be a massive crutch and you will become totally dependent on them, and with assisted braking and steering the game is playing you not you playing the game!

ahhh… hinted to in other posts but I’ll clearly state here… Your tires only want to do one thing at a time. They want to brake, steer, or accelerate. Don’t expect them to be doing more than one of these at a time. (yeah, yeah advanced technique let’s you do more than one but when starting out it’s safer to just follow this rule)

If you’re turning you must be off the brake and throttle.
If you’re braking it must be in a straight line.
If you’re accelerating it better be after you’ve fully completed the turn.

Start with front wheel drive cars until this feels natural. Rear wheel drive cars will punish you severely on that last point.

As others have said, turn off assisted braking.

Not only does it do a terrible job, but also you’ll never learn how to brake yourself. If you need assistance, go with ABS + braking line.

I started with Forza 4, and for a while, used all of the assists, too. It wasn’t until I turned assisted braking off that my lap times genuinely started to improve. It doesn’t take long to get the hang of it, just follow the racing line, and follow the advice given in this thread.

Once you get the hang of that, I strongly urge you to try manual transmission. It took me a long time before I got the courage to try it, and it took me less than a week to get the hang of it. It’s WAY more fun, and has significantly helped my laps get better.

Good luck!

Don’t even take ABS. You’ll take soooo much longer to brake, it’s nuts. If you need help, keep STM and traction control on as these will help you to stay on track in a tight corner, but don’t use ABS ever. Breaking line is OK. I still use it for Nurburgring (full circuit) because there so many &¨@#$%! turns to memorize I just gave up trying.
