Xbox 20/20: Join Us as We Look into the Future of Xbox

What was already going to be a once-in-a-generation year for gaming – a new generation of consoles, a wave of new next-generation games, and the launch of new ways to play with game streaming – 2020 has become the year that challenged us all and tested every commitment we’ve made in the face of COVID-19. Difficult tests tend to reveal your true priorities, and for us they are the health and safety of our employees, our fans and partners. We also want to be transparent in letting our players know what we are doing and what we are thinking during such a crucial time.
Clearly, this year has challenged us to rethink the way we come together to celebrate the important milestones in gaming, and that means working with the knowledge that we may not be able to come together in the same place. Having seen firsthand the resolve of Xbox players, families and friends coming together, doing the right thing and staying home to help flatten the curve, we’ve all felt energized to rethink our approach. How can we share that feeling of excitement and anticipation we all get in gaming’s biggest moments? How could we capture and distribute that feeling I got when I joined Team Xbox – that moment when I got to see what happens next.
So, what is in store for 2020?
This is a momentous year for Xbox, with our next-gen console paving the way for all our games and services to come together in even better ways. Here’s what 2020 looks like, just to start:
Our goal remains to launch Xbox Series X and Halo Infinite this Holiday
All 15 Xbox Game Studios teams are hard at work on next-generation games for Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass
The best development teams around the world are working hard to have their games ready to play on Xbox Series X this holiday
For PC players, we plan to support the community by making all our major releases at launch available with Xbox Game Pass for PC, including Halo Infinite, Wasteland 3, Minecraft Dungeons and of course, Microsoft Flight Simulator.
We have new updates and titles lined up for Xbox Game Pass for console and PC
We’re expanding Project xCloud into new countries and on new devices—and later this year Project xCloud and Xbox Game Pass will come together, enabling you and your friends to play together in more ways.
It’s a lot – and that’s saying something in 2020, a year which could be summed up as “a lot.” With all this in mind, we set out to create new touchpoints to celebrate gaming and share what’s next with our global community.Xbox 20/20
Starting with the May 7 episode of Inside Xbox, we will be showcasing what happens next in the world of Xbox, every month, which is why we’re calling it “Xbox 20/20.” These monthly moments will take place throughout the rest of the year and will be a way for us to engage, connect and celebrate with you about what’s in store for the next generation of gaming, including what’s next for Xbox Series X, Xbox Game Studios, Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud. Every month will bring something different. Stay tuned to Xbox Wire for more details.
For the Xbox 20/20 May update, we will focus on giving you a first look at next-gen gameplay, trailers and sneak peeks from a wide variety of publishing partners and independent developers across the globe and industry, including Ubisoft’s recently announced Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and hear from game creators about what they’re doing with their games on Xbox Series X.
We’ll be confirming games that utilize our new Smart Delivery feature, which ensures that you always play the best version of the games you own for your console, across generations. And all the games you’ll see will be Xbox Series X Optimized, meaning they are built to take advantage of the powerful Xbox Series X features that make games look and feel incredible, including 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, DirectStorage, hardware-accelerated DirectX raytracing, super-fast load times and much more.
In July, we will dedicate time to focus on the incredible games coming from Xbox Game Studios. A number of our studio teams are looking forward to sharing first looks at new gameplay, insights from development teams being optimized for Xbox Series X, and brand-new game announcements. We cannot wait to share this initial look at what some of those teams are working on.
How to join Xbox 20/20 on May 7
I hope you’ll join me at 8 a.m. PDT on May 7 for the next episode of Inside Xbox and the first moment of Xbox 20/20. You can tune-in on:

As you continue to connect with your friends around the world through gaming, we look forward to sharing more of our plans on Xbox Wire so you can all join us as we look into the future of Xbox.
You’ll get more news and updates on Xbox Series X, reveals of new Xbox Game Studios and development partner titles, details on the future of Xbox Game Pass, and much more.
I’ve always believed in the future Team Xbox has been building with its community around the world. To join that vision and make it part of my own responsibilities is something I just couldn’t pass up when I joined the Xbox Marketing team last December and, today, I feel more reassured than ever that we’ll be able to bring it to pass with the help of our community.
Stay safe and be good to one another.
May / June / July 2020 outlook
While Forza is not mentioned specifically in Xbox’s 20/20 plans, these tweets from Aaron Greenberg on May 5th provide some timeline to watch:
“We have too much to show/reveal this year, it cannot fit into one show. So get ready for new stuff from us every month leading up to holiday. Starts with #InsideXbox on Thursday at 8am PT”^
“If helpful the Thursday [Inside Xbox livestream] will have Xbox Series X gameplay from some of our partners. Note many of our biggest partners are working on summer timelines, so this is the start of these monthly reveals. Expect a variety of unique games with some new 3rd party IP as well this month.”^
“Common Qs: Thursday show will be under an hour. June news will be done differently than Inside Xbox show. July is the big Xbox Games Studios show, we will go around the world to see first looks & even new game announcements from those creative teams. Will answer more in replies.”^
Q: so there will be a june show/event/thing then?
A: “There will be news we are planning to revel/release, but not an Inside Xbox show next month.”^
Q: Will any first party be there? Even as a teaser of sorts for the July show?
A: “Nope, saving for big July show focused on 1P.”^
Q: For july it will be several showcases or only one for everything in the same time and place ?
A: “One big show for July planned at the moment.”^
“All of our major Xbox Game Studios releases will launch on PC and GamePass allowing our community to stay connected no matter where they choose to play.”^
In response to a question about community feedback on the upcoming title, Chris Esaki tweeted on May 13th, 2020:
The lockdown certainty put our initial plans on hold - with licensing issues it is difficult to run public playtests and we r working that. Sorry for the wait i promise it will be worth it.
Announced on June 26, 2020: Microsoft is planning to permanently close its physical retail Microsoft Stores other than the flagships in London, New York City, and Sydney.

Although this doesn’t directly address Forza, it would obviously affect purchasing the game and attending game launch events.
Xbox Games Showcase - July 23
Today Xbox announced the date for the July update in its summer monthly “Xbox 20/20” plans - the Xbox Games Showcase (what we could think of as the annual Xbox E3 Briefing replacement). There is no mention of any specific games in this announcement, so by no means does that mean the inclusion of any Forza content, but given the possibility, this would be a key event to watch.

Forza Franchise Heading to Xbox Series X
by Dan Greenawalt, Creative Director, Forza Franchise
Jul 23, 2020 @ 9:20amThis May marked 15 years since we released the first Forza. Forza Motorsport was born from the team’s passion for cars and games. Over the years, we came to see Forza as a community centered around cars, competition, and creativity. As the Forza franchise has expanded, so has the importance of player-to-player connection and the immersion delivered through state-of-the-art realism. The Xbox Series X, with its focus on speed and power, provides us the opportunity to connect our players to the Forza universe, and to one another, like never before. It’s so exciting to start sharing our work with you.
Forza Motorsport
The new Forza Motorsport, currently in early development, is a reimagining of the series. We are taking what has made Forza Motorsport great over the past 15 years and pairing it with new game concepts and new technologies. With the new Forza Motorsport, ray tracing is coming to ForzaTech, you will see a dynamic world in 4K, 60fps, that is connected and dynamic – from surfaces of cars reflecting off each other, to brilliant red paint bouncing off intensely detailed track surfaces, and the interplay of light and shadow throughout the world. Developed by Turn 10 Studios, Forza Motorsport will be available on Xbox Series X, Windows 10 PC and on Xbox Game Pass.

A Turn 10 architect and Xbox director talk audio, visuals and latency.

It’s still in the early stages of development with no release date in sight, but Turn 10 studio software architect Chris Tector and Xbox director of program management Jason Ronald shared a few details about the game with Engadget ahead of today’s virtual showcase.
Tector oversees the technical direction for ForzaTech, the in-house engine that powers all Forza titles, including the Horizon series made by fellow Xbox studio Playground Games. He clearly appreciates automotive beauty, and thinks deeply about the sound, appearance and feel of Forza’s cars.
We talked about each of these subjects – visuals, audio and latency – in regards to Forza Motorsport on the Xbox Series X.
- Ray tracing improves realism; without it developers would have to compromise with approximations that result in flat lighting.
- “Convolution reverb is a large part of this upgrade. It’s essentially ray tracing for acoustics, providing a realistic, dynamic simulation of sound in any physical space. Using convolution reverb, Turn 10 developers are able to sample sounds in specific areas – say, the plush interior of a luxury vehicle or the hollowed-out body of a race car – and apply it to the proper on-screen scenes in real-time.” This technology is enabled by dedicated hardware in next gen devices like Xbox Series X.
- Low latency and dynamic latency input are important due to car speeds exceeding slow latency response times.
Forza Monthly - July 27, 2020 livestream
Chris Esaki appeared during the July 2020 Forza Monthly livestream to talk with host Leahviathan about the unveiling of Forza Motorsport during the July 23rd #XboxGamesShowcase event. Highlights:
-
Foundational work on tools and tech allows the team to build cars and tracks more quickly, at incredible detail, and scale up for high-end PCs and Xbox Series X but also support lower-end PCs.
-
Motorsport forward: The ‘Motorsport’ portion of the new logo is the emphasized intentionally, and the Xbox Games Showcase trailer shows off how you the player and your team show up in liveries on and off track. “Doubling down on motorsport.” “We are going to be the most motorsport Motorsport we’ve made.”
-
New audiences: Game Pass helps bring in a new audience to the community. The development team has the most diverse backgrounds in a Motorsport team yet. A focus on accessibility and inclusivity. Working directly with members of the community about competitive experiences in Motorsport.
-
Player feedback: The ability to create and change content quickly allows for faster response to player feedback. “I really think of the new Forza Motorsport as as love letter to our longtime fanbase as well as a big welcoming to potential new fans that may come in through things like Game Pass.” “The team, especially me, has been spending a lot of time with our streamers, our content creators, understanding their needs around their streaming and their content creation and community and what that means. We’ve read every forum post, we’re all over social media, we know every single feature and car request that have ever come into the Forza Motorsport universe so I think we’re pretty in tune. And I think we’re set up in a way now where we can really deliver on that promise of those features.”
-
Ray Tracing: Ray tracing is coming to Forzatech (the engine that powers the game). A whole host of other technologies to improve visuals on cars and track environments (photogrammetry, new laser scanning) help support what ray tracing reveals.
-
Immersive connection: “That word connection means a lot to me and the team. When I think about this next generation I think that’s the word that really defines it for me.” Ray tracing allows players to connect to cars and tracks. Next gen is “really about building this welcoming home where you and your friends can have a great time creating and competing.”
-
“We’ll be sharing a lot more soon.”
I get that FM8 isn’t coming out anytime soon, but when are we getting new info? I don’t want to have to wait until E3 next year just for it to be the same exact game as FM7.
This statement is very encouraging:
“Player feedback: The ability to create and change content quickly allows for faster response to player feedback. Q: How’s development on the next @ForzaMotorsport coming along?
A: https://twitter.com/LoungeToy/status/1323458569417576452
The team is doing some awesome work especially under the circumstances - def the best driving and racing we’ve had
I saw a rumour on many sites about Horizon before Motorsport. Can somebody tell me how would it work? T10 shoud work on game engine, right? So it’s not possible to release new Horizon on it I guess. I hardly think PG used some old stuff for new Horizon?
Why wouldn’t it work? Horizon is more popular and would actually sell consoles. As far as I know turn 10 is not working on a new engine, they’re just adding things which wouldn’t really benefit a horizon game so there’s no reason to delay it.

No engine, no game.
If T10 is not doing new engine what are they doing? M7 was completely fine and next iteration would be possible in few months. Just copy everything and release as M8. But they said no, it’s not enough and their engine is probably very bad after those years. Like every big SW project with hundreds of cooperators (just speculation).
If engine is OK why M8 doesn’t have any trailer? Why no info?
OK, if they are only adding dirt or some other stuff to the old one, why no new info for M8? It’s many years after release of M7 and you can build 3 games in that time window with all already made assets.
Everybody said M8 is in early stage now. How? Without old engine it’s the only possibility I guess.

I actually said the same when they first announced it was in “early development”, they never said they were building a new engine so I didn’t know why it wasn’t going to launch this year. I personally feel after motorsport 7s lackluster reception the future of motorsport was up in the air. I think there was a real possibility that the motorsport series would end. Sales were down, engagement was down and streamers wouldn’t play it anymore, I think it was in real trouble.
Every motorsport game since the beginning always had a 2 year development cycle so something clearly happened after motorsport 7 to change this. They decided to extend support for 7 which imo really didn’t do much as most of that time was wasted backtracking on the changes they made from past forzas. In the spring of 2019 they said they were working on the sequel and by early December last year it was said they held their first studio-wide playtest. Now obviously covid has effected many games as well as the new consoles themselves so I have no doubt things have been delayed but to go from having a working game in December to stating its still in early development in July is a bit odd.
Horizon has not faced the same issues as motorsport yet so there’s no need to delay their 2 year development cycle. The forza tech engine is not the issue with motorsport, its what they’ve done or lack there of that has caused motorsport to get stale. I do worry about the lack of info though tbh, the trailer should have had gameplay and the fact that it didn’t is strange especially after gt7 released a gameplay trailer.

.They didn’t have a “working” game in December, for all we know it could’ve been an alpha. It was the first test, maybe not even with all of the content in it.
Horizon has definitely faced the same issues as Motorsport. If you follow FH4’s roadmap from the beginning, the game was somewhat buggy at launch and Playground spent much of their time adding back features present from FH3 but deliberately cut from FH4, such as selling duplicate cars won from wheelspins. The difference is that the Forza Motorsport community is much more critical of the game’s issues than the Forza Horizon community, who treats the little bones PG gives them from time to time as a feast.
There are still bugs in FH4 that date from release and PG has never fixed them despite being sent numerous tickets. And, considering PG cannot release a Forza Horizon without taking advantage of Turn 10’s latest version of their engine (which is why FM bugs frequently carry over to FH), PG must stretch FH4’s life however they can while T10 irons the bugs out.
IMO this “slowdown” in FM concerns me because it could mean Microsoft is putting most if not all of their baskets on Horizon, even more so now that they barely have exclusives to use as bait to sell Game Pass subs. I’m seeing way too many cars that should’ve been Motorsport-only being added to Horizon, like the electric race car from VW, and Turn 10 is spending time scanning cars like Koenigsegg Jesko only for Playground to benefit from all the hype by adding it to their game, with last gen features.
Ironically, Forza Motorsport’s biggest opponent is its sibling game. Gran Turismo had a rocky launch but still sold well on PS4, whereas FM7 was mostly cannibalized by FH3 players who’d rather stay in Horizon than move on to the next Motorsport game.

I think 7 made them realise how complacent the team had become, because really they have not innovated or got people exited about the motorsport series since fm3/4 and the team had a very different vibe then.
Since those title we have really only seen graphics and content upgrades, while we lost core features or features became painful to use compared to older titles. Now with the new team lead by Chris Esaki, which is now the largest team t10 has had to date, they seem hugely focused on the core of the game, the fundamentals. For the first time since FM4 we’re hearing physics improvements, new tyre model, new atmosphere system, new temperature modelling, etc. I believe these systems was what he was referring to when they talked about the in house play test, as the game can be in a very basic state to test things like this.
Ray tracing is the big thing going forward that needs to be worked into the graphics and audio engine.
I have a good feeling that the next game is going to knock our sock off, Chris has been what the game has needed for a long time IMO.
