Don’t put yourself down, getting faster is purely down to practice, no magic formula. Getting that first Top 100 time is hard, then before you know it, you will be disappointed if you don’t post a top 50 time.
[quote=Bluebelly83;846020 To the folks suggesting lapping to get faster… I think there comes a time in every digital racer’s life when he realizes he’s just not going to get any faster. I mean… I can have a really nice smooth race, but that will still be several seconds off of the fastest guys in the world. It’s all good. I know my limitations. I’m just looking for people that will be on the same piece of the track at the same time as me.[/quote]
only if you do it alone, and even then you can always do better.
however racing the ghost of someone .5sec faster than you in the same tune will take you about 10-25hotlaps to equal, you’ll see the corners you can take a little faster or you spot the line that gives a bit more run to the straight… do that repeatedly until you reach the top 1k, it’s not until after that point that you get to ppl that do all the corners ‘right’ and have at least decent tunes.
I too find some difficulty in Leagues. I’m level 5-4 (changes depending on the race) in Enthusiast right now, and on some races, I’m losing by a lot, with the same tune as the faster guys, and with no assists. This is also in the Hot Hatch League. I even get beat when I KNOW I have a better tune than them, and I finish last. But then, some races come along and I win by a big margin. Just depends on if the other guys have mistakes to my none. Who knows.
In Forza 6 Leagues, I was in Pinnacle for a very long time, got back into Expert, because the Pinnacle lobbies were vacant, and would win every race.
Most of my leaderboard times in Forza 7 are in the Top 100-200, depending on the track and car division.
So, my advice would be to try using the tunes the fast guys are using, if they’re using a downloaded tune that is. That’ll help your lap times a lot. May take time to get used to them, but with some laps on those tunes, you’ll be a better racer, which in turns gets you better laps.
If I’ve learned anything from playing leagues, it’s that you can utterly destroy unbeatable AI, get consistently top 10% leaderboard times, even 1% sometimes, and still be a pretty mediocre leagues player.
I was just curious how many of you guys are using wheels and how many are using controllers. I’m a average driver who tries to run really clean laps, so I’m usually in the top 10% of leader board times just because I’m clean (in leagues if I race more than one race at at time, I end up at 0 points.) I don’t make the best tunes, and am often passed on straights by other cars. But I was curious how many “top” racers are using wheels? Most? All?
I’m just with the controller, and while I have pretty good control of the throttle and brake, I can’t always be as clean as I want on the turns. That works fine against the AI, but against real opponents, I’m always nervous of being considered a wrecker. I’ll almost always avoid multiplayer in a non-ghost event.
Almost all use controller.
Assist used, build of car (tune doesn’t always matter), and practice separate the best from everyone else.
All the top guys use a controller. Wheel users will always refute it and say “but the experience is so much better”. I just want to be fast, I don’t care about anything else.
I use a wheel
Well of course they would. It is “that much better”. Do a thing here, Do a thing there, still fast.
Depends on the time of day. most of the time I use a controller, cause it’s later at night when I play, and I live in an apartment complex. The wheel is a little loud at times. But all of my fast times are using an Elite controller. My wheel is a Logitech G920.
Running laps in Rivals is a good practice, but also watching the Replays of faster people is like having an instructor pointing out things.
Turn on the Telemetry and notice the approaches to turns, braking, and what gears are being used.
Selecting someone who is a second or two faster than what you normally run will give you insight of how they’re doing whatever course you’re on. Trying to chase down a really skilled person doesn’t help when they’ve moved a corner or two ahead of you because you cannot see that they’re doing.
Take small steps of people close to your time, and then move up as you succeed,
Also, you can try to practice just one thing per stint, like a soccer practice, the guys don’t usually practice by playing whole games, but one or two things at a time.
So, for say 5 to 10 laps, concentrate on getting on throttle earlier, next 10 braking a little later or trail braking a little deeper and being smoother on coming of brakes etc etc.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I am no where near any of the top racers in this game, not even in the same zip code, but that’s fine with me. With my work schedule I don’t have enough time to play games most days (but I can post on forums while I work… ). I still enjoy playing this game and when I break out my wheel, I just want to focus on having an enjoyable clean race even if I finish in the bottom third. That said I have to admit I have way more fun running private club races than random online hoppers and leagues. I haven’t tried out the leagues in this game yet because work has been nasty but I will try to this weekend.

Clean laps mean nothing apparently other than putting you in a starting position you cannot finish in for many of us. I get clean laps, it is in my nature. I get put up front in lobbies I just joined without having done a race in it yet. Why am I over and over put ahead of people who just raced and have a time in the prior race I wasn’t even in? This system encourages people to intentionally dirty every lap so that they do not get put up at the front of the grid. All this does is encourage dirty racing, corner cutting and track extending. This needs to be fixed ASAP so that clean racing is encouraged rather than discouraged. This will turn the collision on leagues into an absolute disaster. You need to think this through Turn 10 and stop rewarding bad behavior which has been what you have been doing for year now.
More and more us slow racers are getting League tracks to ourselves, as the faster racers move up out of Grassroots. I’m still a solid 5, points never higher than 300, and almost always back to 0 by the end of a session. Had several races today where I was in the lead pack, one where I got on the podium! no, I didn’t magically get way better - just a little faster, while next-level drivers are indeed leveling up and out.
MP races are shaping up too. Endurance GT has a lot of polite drivers; if you can keep an eye on your six and move off line for others to pass, most will show you the courtesy of not knocking you off when given the chance. Classics Never Die is more of a mixed bag. But in all lobbies, if you can just keep driving you’ll eventually leave the crashers behind - once they’ve got no one to bully, they quit on their own.
Frankly I’m beginning to like it down here TBH for the last few years I kinda like giving slow drivers and noobs some back-of-the-pack racing fun. I think it helps others stick with it a bit longer than they otherwise would. It was other veterans showing me some patience that got me through the hapless-noob phase, now I get to enjoy paying it forward.
Wait until you get to Enthusiast which is way harder. I constantly go from a 5 Enthusiast to a 1 Grassroots and get moved up again after the first grassroots race. It’s a nice but temporary confidence builder. Yes fast racers will eventually move up and even it out but that will take some time. Does anyone remember how bad it was in that lambo league when a prize was involved? It was awful. The Endurance GT racers tend to stay where they are and it is a good hopper but don’t expect the same treatment in these leagues.
In professional there is hardly anyone. I’m lucky if I’m in a race of more than 5 people. I’ve only slowly grinded up to rank 4. Just not much points going around. Enthusiast is probably the most fun Band at the moment. I would drop back if I was able to lose enough points. Lmao.
The lambo league was fantastic in pinnacle for the most part. I really enjoyed that one. Getting podiums was a challenge in 20+ player rooms.
I dont think Im ever going to get out grassroots. Poor ManteoMax is doomed to stay there forever with his little clio.
I got to 1 grassroots yesterday, then the next round loaded everyone without me. Changed lobbies, same thing. try to find another, end up back in lobby 2 with race in progress again. I havent looked but that has to be worth dropping 2 levels.
No worries mate, my lap times are always in the top 40s in the hot hatch but it doesn’t matter because the civic is straight up faster than the BMW and people are racing dirty as [edited]
I check after just about every race to see how I’m doing and if there’s room for improvement and I noticed that in a lot of cases unless I’m willing to go dirty or near dirty making the best lap times is difficult. Also the tune for a TCS build and one without it are completely different. So you have to tune for whichever you’re planning on using. TCS needs car that isn’t stiff and proper driving to not activate the TCS while one without it needs to be more rigid to prevent unwanted slippage.
It sounds like there are quite a few kindred spirits in here. That makes me feel good. I appreciate the advice that several of you have shared with me. I will keep driving because it’s fun. Thanks everyone.
I’ll add that at least the “black screen” issue seems solved. I didn’t get disconnected once this weekend. So, that’s good!
But…this points system really seems to force you to use LB cars even more than before. If you want to try any other car, you are really punished for it. Last night, I tried the Jag F-Type in one race, which sucked, and I lost a lot of points. So experimenting with marginal cars is really not worth it. So in the current Sport Coupe ghost league, the “go to” cars are the 370Z, the Lotus Evora, and the Porsche Cayman. For speed tracks, other cars can work. Anyway, this is just what I’ve seen so far.
