Is Rio a fantasy course?

Out of curiosity I checked google street view in order to see how close forza 6’s Rio de Janeiro map comes to reality. Well, I don’t expect it to be 100% accurate, but representative enough to resemble the real place. And judging by what street view shows me, this does not seem to be the case.

On one hand there are several things missing in the streets that I recognize, and on the other hand there are streets that simply do not exist… at least not where turn 10 put them. You might want to check it out for yourself. Mind that street view’s images might be old, however, there are huge buildings in the forground of the picture that are most likely still there, while forza doesn’t have them.

It’s not a game breaker or anything like that. Forza 6 is going to be great, and the course still looks awesome. But since I model 3D graphics mystelf and have tried to capture the impression of my own hometown in germany (being as accurate as time and ressources allowed me to) , I am kind of dissapointed by this fact. Not by much, but enough to have me check out how close Forza’s Prague comes to the real city. Might also be a matter of licenses / permissions so I’m not trying to jugde too hard. It’s just curious.

It’s as much fantasy course as Prague is on FM5.

It was mentioned in interviews for Forza Motorsport 5 by Dan (and Alan Hartman) that Prague’s streets were actually laser-scanned and that they’d then take some creative liberties with certain sections to string together a raceable circuit; streets getting widened, big obstacles like fountains getting moved etc.

I believe they went about Rio the same way.

Its still a great track to drive on either way. Looking forward to using this track in race series it has some great technical sections and a few nice passes places too.
The track was in forza one but to be honest i dont remember it much to know if it is the same layout or not

Yes that was my thought too. It has been too long and I don’t remember all the details of the Rio track from FM1. It does look cool when you come into the home stretch and all the confetti cannons go off.

I really like the layout of the Rio track in FM6. The tunnel section is really cool and love the S curves.

It’s not the same track. Forza 1 had Rio, but the track was completely different.

Now that I am in Rio de Janeiro I can say that the virtual course is cut together from various places of the real city. I also made a short clip: Meta gaming in Rio - YouTube

I’d love to see some comparison pictures of the game track and real locations. I’ll probably never make it to Rio… Are you up for the detective work? I suspect not, since it’s a HUGE amount of work…

The digital course in FoM6 is meant to be representative of the physical places in Rio. It is not meant to be an exact replica. They do that for quite a few reasons. Some folks don’t want their property/building copied in game, so Turn 10 tries to obfuscate any building or property they don’t have express permission to use. They also don’t want folks running the course in the game, and then trying to duplicate their feats in the physical world; then the mayhem caused in game would be come real. They change things up so that is not a real possibility.

this wasn’t a problem in Metropolis Street Racer/Project Gotham Racing. why should this be a prob in the Forza series? i don’t want to say that you’re completely wrong but i think it’s not that big problem as you see it.

interesting post. I was wondering how close Rio circuit was to real life, although I’ve been there it was a long time ago and wasn’t there long enough to get to know the layout of the place.

Prague I’ve been there and some of it looks legit to me such as the old town square and Charles bridge section, so that looks authentic with the layout. I don’t know how accurate the other side of the map is (going up the curved banking and down again) I don’t recall venturing to that part of Prague so it’d be interesting to see how real that is to FM5/6’s version. The whole riverside section is real and I remember going along there (on both sides of the river) but I was there in 2005 so long before Turn 10 made it. If I ever went back there I’d do a ‘track walk’. I recognise some of the buildings it has in back ground too, there’s an odd shaped one that really stands out, it looks like something that would fit well in ‘Futurama’. When I was there over 10yrs ago I was wondering what building that is, can anyone shed some light on that?

If it was a real track in Rio there would be body parts floating in the ocean, raw sewage running down the sides of the track, police protests and armed robberies at both the start and finish line.

Roll them windows up and do NOT STOP THE CAR!

I live in Rio, and short answer: it’s a fantasy course.

Long answer: some parts of the city depicted in the course are real like Flamengo Park (where the start/finish line is), Alto da Boa Vista (the forest uphill) and Lapa arches (the final corner), even though they are not depicted as they really are in real life (that big pedestrian path near the arches doesn’t exist). Other parts, especially the favela uphill with a large avenue and the tunnel that goes ahead are not real.

Also, some of the real parts are not close to each other as in the game in real life and the distance between them is actually much bigger. A real track with such parts would be longer than The Green Hell.

In fact Rio used to have its own street circuit in the times prior to Formula 1, and it was called Circuito da Gávea (Gavea circuit) and it was really incredible!
