How I made Flash

I’m making this to show how I paint. Now, before I get started let me just say that this is just how I paint and not the set rule. There have been many helpful posts in the past about using grid patterns and such. Myself, I like to free hand most of my work. I have been know to use a grid here and there for faces. realistic paints mostly.
Now for this paint I really like using the primitive - 27 shape. Hell, I use it a lot… It has such a great use. You can stretch it out or skew it to make great curves.
I usually start with the head and work out from there. I use contrasting colors just because there easer to see for me. I built the head off the source pic I have and made it a solid color. I then used the primitive - 36 shape along with 27 to sketch out the shape of the body.

Now here I started working on the main arm that comes across. Still in sketch mode.

Now, I like to go all around the outside of the body trying to get the shape just right. After you think you got the over all shape right. Time to start filling in. You can do this with the circle or my fav. shape 27 again. You can some times cover more area with that shape.

Here, still filling in and making definition hints along the way with gradient circle. We will be coming back later and changing these a bit.

Now for the next step I got everything shaping up nicely. It’s time to start selecting the right colors. this is pretty important because if you don’t have it right it’s going to be harder to shade and it’s just not going to look right. You can also move around a bit to. I started something in the background for later.

Did I forget to tell you I move around a lot… I went back up to the face. I started doing some shading and making some of the features.

a little more…

Here I started working a little more on the background. I also started doing a little shading on the leg area.

Moved up toward the arms doing more shading. I used the small gradient circle at a transparentsy level of 10 or so.

I put some final touches on it. It turned out like this.

Hope this helps in some small way for those out there trying to figure out just where to start. The most important part is to have fun!!!

Thanks for the look inside a painters mind. Your right though…there are as many styles of painting as there are painters but there is always something to learn. I loved the updates you sent me and now to see it all grouped together is such a bonus. I personally will take away your use of shapes to fill with…thanks Buddy!

Very cool read S. Buddy. Nice to see how others think in the booth. Thanks for sharing the tips. This will help a lot of people, even if it only helps 1 person it was worth it. Nice to see how “Flash” came to be.

nice paint m8,good to see the workings as well

Awesome and mind blowing

Thanks a bunch for showing this progression, especially by including the number of layers used. I often see these images on others’ cars that we all know had to have used more than the allotted 1000 layers. It’s good to finally see somebody doing it correctly, without cheating the system!

I really appreciate that. Your probably right about the computer thing but all of my friends paint like me. We do it for the joy of it and relaxation factor. I and many like me still do it they old fashioned way…ha ha … with the controller.

this, from… months ago?! how’d I never see this thread! Thanks for bumping it up, enjoyed see this!
