American muscle cars and hot rods vs most popular Japanese tuned or tunable sports coupes and saloons, is how I interpret it. Could also be domestic (USA) vs import (Japan), or Drag vs Circuit.

They are all cars that have been created for competition, either purpose built (eg Lancia Stratos) or derived from a road car (eg Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500), with a minimum number having to be built. Original Mini-Coopers were homologation specials that became far more popular than expected.
There are many rumours of creative accounting and cars being wheeled round the back to be counted again, but what can you expect from motorsport, where bending the rules is the norm?
