Gearing help...

any tips in gearing, tuning etc greatly appreciated

Help in gearing what way? Truly, gearing is a very, very car and driving style specific process. Also, do you do manual clutch shifting or automatic in game? What kind of track are you racing on? Drifting, rally, circuit or drag strip? Is the car AWD or RWD?
Your question has probably gone unanswered because there is so much detail that you haven’t provided (most will assume because you aren’t certain) which takes a great deal of patience to address. It’s a question you asked with an answer that will usually confuse someone more. There are most likely other basics you need to understand first before jumping into this topic but I’ll at least give you a start.

One caveat to my advice,I’m new to the franchise but not to cars IRL which helps and confuses me in applying it to the game. I know enough to guide you to how to go about getting the answer you need, only. No one has tried so far so I’ll give you my best.

The first thing I would recommend is pick one car in your stable to stick with and drive during this process. Tuning, even with experts, is more of an art than a science and it is a constant process. You need a car with enough potential that you can be competitive during this learning process (so you don’t become frustrated) but do not choose too much car, like the hyper cars. Just driving them on default settings is a challenge and these are cars who have more capability than most drivers have skill enough to master.

I would go with a RWD, personally, because their loss of traction even in a straight line shows you exactly what torque vs HP looks like. For example, a high torque RWD car is going to be very difficult to launch in the lower gears because you can’t floor it (sometimes you can’t give full beans even in 4th with these cars because you’ll lose traction) but in drifting, this is more of an advantage.
After a bit with the car, you will learn what speeds it likes in and out of turns and what gears you find yourself using more. Optimizing your gearing to this driving style be much more important in longer races because even perfect shifts cost you a little time magnified over distance and time; improper shifting or just one miss shift in a short track will cost you a couple positions.
Now that you’ve got all this information about your car, come back to this topic of gearing. Know your max torque and at what RPM is your redline. Know whether the car is a turbo or N/A or supercharged.
Come back to this question of gearing when you’ve done all this and then the magic stars. Also, during this process, if you have a moment of insight, search online for a good gearing calculator. Put your current numbers in (tires, max torque, redline, default gearing) and see how the formula works vs what you’re seeing.
Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up!
