I czan’t play the game… it keeps freezing a few minutes after launch… and most of the time it freeze when you see the car in front of your house… and it just freeze on that point of the game before i can even do anything…

CPU : i7 6700k
gpu : 1080ti
gpu driver : latest
Windows 10 1809
Ram : 32gb

Same exact issue. Was running perfectly fine yesterday and the day before and now it freezes either at the black loading screen right before it loads into the game or about a second after it shows your car outside the player home. Restarting my PC did nothing.

CPU: i5-6600k @ 4.6 GHz
GPU: GTX 1080 Ti
RAM: 16 GB
Using latest GPU and OS updates.

Edit: I decided to write a message directly to support and after the few minutes it took, I tried starting my game again and it worked. I don’t know if it was just bugged because I think I restarted my game (to change settings because it had reset them) while it was joining an online session, but either way it works now. Of course, the reason I’m here writing this edit right now is because my game froze at the end of the loading screen while fast traveling to the Festival site. This game is definitely a bit messy on PC.

I wouldn’t take that for a fix issue sometimes the game will work for me and an 1h later it crashes… sometimes it works and 15 min into playing the game boom crashes… (well freeze and must alt+f4 to get out of it).

I am going to try the dynamic option as the other guy suggested… I figured also it might be from one of the settings and definetly not hardware related.

You’re right, that definitely was not a fix and my issues are now worse than ever. I have spent over 24 hours trying to fix this and although I have narrowed down some crashes/freezes, the game is now and remains literally unplayable for more than a couple minutes at best.

Precision X seems to be causing the game to crash either before/during the legal disclaimer screen. Why this did not happen when I first got the game I do not know. Having the Microsoft wireless adapter plugged in before starting the game (even without a controller on) seems to sometimes but not always cause the game to freeze upon loading the player home/entering your car. However, plugging it in and turning on your controller while in-game does not cause it to freeze.

I have created a Reddit post to compile my issues and attempted fixes and that I can update when I figure more stuff out. Also, I contacted Forza support 4 days ago and have not yet received any response.

Having the same issue as well. Didn’t have any issues in the Demo, played it for about 5’ish hours.

Soon as the EA went live on the 28th, It’s hit or miss. Sometimes it will crash right away when it shows your car in front of your house, or after browsing in the menu system. Keep checking everyday for a Nvidia driver update or a game update (currently on the 411.70 driver) . Was hoping the 850mb launch day path would fix this issue, it didn’t…

This is a pretty game breaking issue, as it makes me not even want to play and I have been anxiously awaiting this game for months.

It’s definitely not my system. Running an 8700k, 16GB RAM and a GTX 1080. Thought it was my GPU overclock at first, ended up reverting it back to stock settings on the OC and it still freezes right away…

I seemed to have fixed the issue.

Went back and tried 4 different Nvidia drivers; 399.24, 411.63, 411.70 and the recently released 416.16 (horrible FPS drop in DX11 titles with this driver). All to no avail and same freezing (instantly every reboot with the 416 driver). Stumped, I figure it’s definitely a game issue and not a driver issue. I remember in some titles certain graphics settings can cause instability (Ultra Grass in GTA 5 etc.). I had everything maxed out except AA @ 3440x1440 120FPS resolution prior. I didn’t feel like going through each setting so I tried re-enabling Dynamic Optimization which defaults on my system to Ultra. Locked that in and entered game. So far no crashes, freezes or stutters. Tired everything I could to trigger the freezing, which is usually either at the house screen or sifting through the menu system. No freezes.

So in short, there is definitely a setting(s) that is causing the issue, I assume one of the ones I had set to ‘Extreme’ which is about 4 or 5 options. Enabling Dynamic Optimization and letting the game dictate the settings fixed the issue, at least for me. Not sure if there is an ‘extreme’ Dynamic Optimization setting, mine defaulted to Ultra with no other higher option. I definitely notice a reduction in texture/car detail quality, but the game runs smoothly and that’s all I care about right now.

Hope this helps!

Had to look and make sure I was still in support section for Forza Motorsport 7, turns out, I am!

What do you know, it is. Thanks for pointing that out. This isn’t my thread but I’ll make a new post in the Forza Horizon 4 section as my issues are a bit different than OP’s anyway. See here.

By the way OP if you’re still having issues with not being able to start the game at all, check to make sure you are not running anything like Rivatuner Statistics Server, MSI Afterburner, or Precision X (even though these should not stop a program from working). Even though it did not do this when I first got the game, currently Precision X will always prevent me from getting FH4 to go past the legal disclaimer screen.

Its Precision, manually set fans to 100%, press APPLY, close Precision, fans should be running, then start Forza

If people are still here waiting for a reply, I found the problematic setting.

Turn mirror quality to Ultra instead of Extreme.

I don’t know why it’s this exact setting, but the game only freezes after the loading screen with this setting turned up.

My god you’re right, thank you so much for figuring that out. I just played 3 consecutive sessions with mirror quality at Ultra for a couple minutes each with no freezes. I then changed it to Extreme and played 5 sessions in a row, all but one ending in a crash either upon loading in or within 1 minute (other one lasted 5 then crashed when I tried to join an online session). I then switched it back to Ultra and played 3 more sessions for a minimum of 3 minutes each with no freezes. I will let some other people who have been having this issue know about this and hopefully it will fix it for them as well.

Considering the seemingly random times that it freezes at, the fact that my hardware usage is well below maximum, and the fact that it can even freeze before even loading into your car, I never considered graphics settings as a possibility and am dumbfounded as to why this would be a thing.

This also may explain why my game worked at first; I must’ve been using the Ultra preset (which does not max out the settings) and then when I updated my drivers and my game settings got reset, I must’ve manually set them all to the maximum.

If you’re referring to the game crashing before even getting to the main menu, yes you’re correct that it’s Precision X’s fault. If you’re referring to the game freezing upon/soon after loading into the game, Precision X is not the issue but rather the “Mirror Quality” setting as discovered by wolarts.

You guys should upload your benchmark screenshots: it would be easier to guess what’s the cause.
My game also often freezes after loaded to garage but sometimes also during gameplay (rarely). Like today:

The program ForzaHorizon4.exe version 0.0.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

I will try to lower mirror quality and provide more data for this hypothesis.

No freezes so far. Refl. quality setting seems to work.

EDIT: freezes again. It’s random, so is hard to track down.
