Flying Lizard #45 Porsche Replica Project Sneak Preview

I’m by no means a great painter. But I AM pretty proud of my current Flying Lizard replica project. Its taken me nearly two weeks to get to where I am with the car and there is still some work to be done. Also keep in mind that this is an amalgamation of different liveries across varying seasons so some things may crossover to my replica. I won’t share it until I’m absolutely satisfied that its completed to the very best of my abilities. And although I’m not a known painter and am certain there are a LOT of far better painters out there, that my replica is a pretty darn good one.

At any rate, here are two sneak preview shots in it’s current stage.

Nice paintjob, looks good.

Thanks! I currently have the Fikse wheels that you see mounted to the car but am having trouble finding the correct wheels or at least the closest match possible. I also meant to mention that I am definitely looking for feedback since this is my first real-world replica attempt.

Very nice indeed! my one recommendation would be with some of the logos you may want to custom make your fonts, it really does make a car look 1000x better. other than that, great work!

Thanks!

The fonts are my weakness, I know. I lose patience in trying to duplicate a logo’s text so I usually lay down a stock font at first and (if I haven’t lost interest) go back and try to recreate them. I actually did create the Michelin font and the IMSA logo font from scratch but I did an extremely hacky job on the Michelin Man himself on purpose. The rationalization for that was that I would shrink it when it came time to apply it to the car and it wouldn’t be AS noticeable unless scrutinized. (Again, a lack of patience and time on my part.) But I’ve spent so much time on this one and its actually turning out to be a very good replica that I do plan on doing custom fonts. It will, however, probably be the very last thing that I do.

The thing that “bothers” me the most on a car like this is that I’m trying to get the decals at the right size and placement on the body of a production car instead of the actual racing car so some things just don’t quite fit or line-up so I have to eyeball it.

I’ve seen your work and its amazing. It makes me envious of your talent for being able to manipulate basic shapes into real-world logos and decals. Some day, maybe I’ll ask you to teach me the basics in the way you work. My logos end-up looking passable but I always end up using a LOT of layers to get there. You can check out my decals in-game and see what I mean. They L:OOK good but logistically, they’re unsound as far as how many layers I need to achieve them.

Yeah its the best thing to do, just place things in approximately the right area in a way that looks best, its usually the best thing to do in situations like that.

I actually do 99% of my work via the eyeball method. The only time I calculate is with text, just to make sure they’re all the exact same height and width and all at the proper coordinates. But I don’t even use the coordinates to measure the distance between them. Its all eyeballed.

Looking really good mate, I like it! Keep up the great work.

If anyone would like a customized version of any of my liveries (name, flag, number) shoot me an XBL message. I’ll make the changes and share it then reply back when it’s finished.
