As the title says does anyone know if Ray Tracing is going to be on the Xbox Series X or something close to it?
I don’t have a solid answer for you, but I casually looked to see if any of the reflections in the preview copies were ray traced (the previews are Xbox only).
It was definitely at least screen space reflections (unless there is some other technology capable of that reflection fidelity that I’m unaware of), which is technically a form of ray tracing, but I couldn’t tell if it was software based or hardware accelerated, and saw nothing that could indicate a “truer” form of ray tracing.
I’d guess it was hardware accelerated screen space reflections based on the fidelity, which has severe limitations compared to ray tracing since it can only reflect things already rendered on screen, but is WAY more efficient.
The Xbox version comes with a 30 FPS quality mode and a 60 FPS performance mode, but I believe the preview was locked to quality mode. I suspect SSR will be turned down or off in performance mode.
Hopefully this helps a little.
Somebody please correct me if any of this information is wrong. Like I said, I only gave it a casual thought.
Well it looks gorgeous for it not being full on ray traced as long as it’s close to it as possible that’s all I care about and I’ll probably have a million or more photos in FH6 than I do compared to FH3,FH4,and FH5
well thanks for your information though much appreciated and see you in Japan which is 35 days till the premium edition release which is tomorrow
“Full” ray tracing is kind of impossible. Right now the best version of ray tracing we have is path tracing, but even it isn’t “true” ray tracing, since it has to limit the number of bounces calculated.
Good implementation of SSR can look nearly as good for a fraction of the hardware cost. Plus, global lighting ray tracing is getting a lot more efficient these days, although lighting ray tracing is harder to spot in outdoor daytime environments.
Shadows are the real issue, and FH6’s shadows are certainly not ray traced. It’s not a knock against the game, I don’t think there is a single implementation of ray traced shadows on either the XSX or the PS5, it’s just that those singular hard shadows (even when there are multiple light sources) everywhere bug me. But I’m asking for the impossible here. Just ranting with no real purpose.
Nah you’re all good I’m just shocked of how beautiful FH6 is without Ray Tracing it’s so beautiful that I’ll probably sacrifice the 60 fps for the quality mode unless if it’s the same in either mode then I’ll go with the performance mode I’m just so excited for FH6 ![]()

In the middle of watching the final HokiHoshi video, and I gave it a closer eye and I’ve got good news.
It’s not just SSR, at least when it comes to the reflections off cars. You can see objects off screen reflected on the back of the cars. That means XSX quality mode has at least some “true” ray traced reflections.
It’s possible I’m mistaken and they are just cube map reflections (which can also render things offscreen but at much lower quality), but I highly doubt it given the fidelity being shown.
Unsure how much it’s implemented. It could be just the player car, it could be all cars, and it could even possibly be all reflections (I doubt it, but possible). I’ll try to keep an eye out and see what I can spot.
Well sounds good news to me whether it has it or not but I absolutely appreciate your help solving this for me man I absolutely love the Forza Community is cause of people like you and I genuinely and wholeheartedly mean it ![]()

Im looking forward to the digital foundry youtube video review, they are by far the best at evaluating the graphics and performance of the game. The game looks stunning in quality mode I just hope they can achieve the 60fps without too much trade off
I honestly don’t think Series X can improve THAT much further. Ray tracing takes a HUGE hit on performance. FH5 looked great, but to improve much further, which it does look slightly better than FH5, raytracing would just be hard for the Series X to do in its current state.
My PC arrives this week, so I no longer have to suffer from console limitations ![]()
The only thing I don’t want changed for performance mode on XSX is the night shadows, I love the night shadows on FH5 with quality mode, but if I can get those on the performance mode for FH6, I’d be so delighted, and seeing the preview build videos, night shadows are definitely in quality mode, which I won’t mind running 30FPS after completing the campaign, just give me 60FPS with night shadows please!
Non-ray traced shadows are CPU intensive, and being an open world, FH6 is more likely to be CPU bottlenecked on the XSX. It’s possible they found a way to make it work at 60 FPS, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
