FH4 low GPU usage

sooo a little while ago I made a post about the game crashing a bunch and that was due to a ram clocking issue, which has since been fixed and the game now runs without crashing. in that post I mentioned how the game (according to the in-game fps meter) was only using ~70% of my gpu, but since it was running at 130fps I was fine with that. however, now the game seems to only want to use about 50-60% of my gpu and results in a lower fps (usually about 100, the other day it decided to be especially difficult and ran at ~60ish and dipped a lot). there are also occasional micro stutters that aren’t game breaking but definitely distracting (but strangely I don’t see my fps meter reflect the dip when it stutters). I understand this is super first world problemy hahah but since I went and bought a 1080 ti I wanted it to be at least better than my previous 1070 ti, which ran at 100% usage but got me a higher and more consistent fps. not a big issue but I know my gpu is capable of more and I wanna use it lmao. not necessarily have my gpu be at 100% but have 144 fps stably/consistently, which I’m pretty sure my pc is capable of doing

pc specs:
Zotac 1080 ti amp extreme
Ryzen 7 1700x
16gb trident z ddr4 ram (bought a 3200mhz kit but had to downclock to 2666mhz because first gen Ryzen won’t let me go any higher .-. clocking my ram at 3200mhz was what caused the crashing before)
corsair rm650
game is running off a wd blue 500gb drive that I’ve checked and doesn’t have any bad sectors

• I’ve tried changing settings but I’m not seeing a big difference between max settings and ultra preset. ultra runs at ~100fps with 50-60% gpu usage and max runs about the same fps wise, but about 70-80% gpu usage.
• I checked task manager and that reports my cpu usage as 30-50%, so I don’t think it’s a cpu bottleneck. but it shows my gpu (with fh4 open) is at 3%, which is strange because I doubt 3% of a 1080 ti can run fh4 at 30 fps, let alone anything higher.
• I’ve checked temps and my gpu is under 70ºC when under load, so I don’t think it’s thermal throttling.
• task manager shows all 8 of my cores to be under a pretty even load, all sub 50%, so probably not the issue I’ve seen some people face where the game maxes out two cores and doesn’t use anything else.
• I’ve tried restarting the game and my pc etc etc, which sometimes works for the first minute or so, with the game running at ~130-140 fps but it quickly dips back down to 100ish and stays there. I’ve left the fps unlocked but the game seems to be targeting 100, not sure why.
• Nvidia driver on latest version (445.87)

I could switch the game over to my ssd but it’s really big and I’d rather keep my ssd clear for photoshop and premiere stuff. I’ll do it if it fixes the issue but to my knowledge doing so will only affect load times and not fps?

any help would be appreciated, tysm in advance!

  • close all unneccessary apps and turn off an AV
  • update OS to Win10 ver. 1909 with the latest update from Tuesday
  • check if the issue occurs while playing offline
  • check if the issue occurs while playing other games

I suppose that you have tried all of the above steps but maybe you’ve forgotten bout smth. If nothing helps then try to submit a ticket to the support with screenshots and a short video or smth. Probably you won’t get the answer as quick as you’d like to but at least devs will be warned about this issue and maybe they will find out what causes this problem.

Unfortunately slow disks may impact FPS.

Not in this way, not for this case.

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ve never installed any AV so rn the only thing is windows defender. I updated windows yesterday and today there was another small update which I just installed but had no effect. Tried playing online/offline and didn’t see any difference (some parts of the map give me another 10-20 fps and then dropped down again but to my knowledge this is normal?). I was experiencing something similar with r6 siege (lower fps than expected) but in that game according to task manager at least the gpu was being fully utilised. After changing some settings there I’m back to normal framerates. However, changing my settings on fh4 back down from max to the ultra preset doesn’t really change anything. Obviously I can change it to high or medium but I’m sure a 1080 ti is capable of more than that and having spent so much on this gpu I feel like it’s wasted if I’m playing at lower settings. I’m pllaying at 1080p btw so it shouldn’t really be a struggle. In the meantime I’ll submit a ticket and see what the devs say, ty!

The game may not be optimized for such high FPS.

Whatsoever, try running some benchmark software to ensure your system is working properly first.

Very probable.

Another blind guess… to test your luck.

hm if it’s bad optimisation I assume there’s just nothing I can do there? I did ran a benchmark (userbenchmark) and everything is performing as expected, so there shouldn’t be a problem with hardware
