Expanding Horizon Link: Context-Based Customization for Better Player Communication

Hi everyone, I’d like to share an idea that could improve Horizon Link and make player communication feel more natural, especially during races. Right now, Horizon Link still has a noticeable limitation: players can only customize 2 phrases, while the other 2 are automatically switched based on context. Although this system is an upgrade from FH4, it doesn’t always work well in practice. The auto-switched phrases often don’t match what the player actually wants to express, and more importantly, during races these dynamic phrases rarely change or trigger in meaningful ways. This becomes especially noticeable in key moments like race starts, collisions, missing checkpoints, or crossing the finish line, where communication either feels off or is simply missing.

So here’s my idea: allow players to customize Horizon Link phrases based on specific in-game events. For example, players could assign their own phrases for situations like race start, finishing, collisions, or missing checkpoints. This would allow communication to feel more responsive and personal, make use of more Horizon link, and letting players react naturally in real time—whether that’s apologizing after an accident, hyping up the start of a race, or saying “GG” at the finish.

At the same time, this system should remain flexible. In the settings, players could choose between different modes: a new context-based custom system where phrases are tied to events, the current FH5-style dynamic system, a fully manual FH4-style system with four customizable phrases and no automation, or simply turning Horizon Link off entirely. This way, players who enjoy social interaction can have a richer experience, while those who prefer to focus purely on driving won’t be affected at all.

Overall, expanding Horizon Link in this way would make communication more meaningful, more fun, and more in line with how players actually experience the game.
