dirty laps when overtaking

Can someone explain the logic of getting tagged with a dirty lap for overtaking and passing another car?
Is the idea of racing not to overtake and pass other cars?
Just finished 20 laps at IMS oval. With 24 cars spread out around the whole track it is impossible to run many “clean” laps.
Is there away to avoid this?

Drafting = dirty lap

Funny because drafting doesn’t even do anything in this game

It does, just that;
a) it isn’t as pronounced as in previous games, and
b) you won’t really notice it in Single Player as the AI is a cheating bastard

Except passing slow cars at high speed IS NOT DRAFTING…

You dont get done for drafting unless you are sitting behind those slow cars

Drafting is drafting, regardless of whether it is for 10 seconds or half a second.

And it does give a benefit, it may not be as obvious as previous games but it is there. It’s most obvious either on the ovals or tracks with long straights like Sarthe, Monza and Spa where you can really tuck in behind a car coming out of a fast sweeping corner (out of chicanes is harder due to the delay getting on the power), you might not gain on the car in front of you much because the computer is a cheating bastard but your speed at the end of the straight will be measurably higher.

Yeah, and the drafting is a joke. You could draft a car until the end of time and not gain a tenth

Let’s try this again.
Do NOT get behind a car: stay wide and pass.
You will be tagged with a dirty lap AS YOU PULL ALONGSIDE THE CAR.
That is NOT drafting.
I will ask again; is there a way to avoid this?

I believe you answered your own question.

Yeh dont hit them as you go past
You don’t get a dirty unless you touch them or sitting behind them within 100 ft

Maybe you could supply an actual video of it happening

Technically, you do get a significant side draft the closer you get to a car as you pass it. Drafting does not only occur behind another car … but also beside another car and in front of another car. Any NASCAR fan can tell you that good race drivers use side drafts to pass cars all the time.

You did note that I said “STAY WIDE AND PASS”?

Yep I did. And at race speeds there’s still a drafting effect even when passing wide. It does diminish the farther away you get … but it’s still present. I was just trying to clarify what drafting is and how it actually works a bit.

To the side only might be ok, but drafting or being drafted will dirty the lap. It is very difficult to keep AI out of your draft wake even if you approach and pass clean. If you are already accounting for all this and still get dirty laps, then I would say you have answered your own question.

Being drafted on is the problem I have. People do that on purpose, I will swerve from side to side to keep them from being directly behind. Maybe being drafted ON should be changed. That doesnt seem fair if youre just driving along and someone is riding on your bumper that YOU get a penalty

It’s called bump drafting.
The rear car uses the front cars draft to gain speed and in turn pushes the lead car faster, it forms a feedback loop.
That’s why it dirties the lap.
In forza 1 and maybe even 2, people were using that with the enzo to get unrealistic laps around the old top speed oval.

The only real way to see it now is on the large oval tracks.
With everyone using the same car/tune.
Get two guys to bump draft and watch them pull away like they have another couple hundred hp over you.

Kinda-sorta. Bump-drafting specifically refers to the trailing car giving the lead car a physical push due to the gains in speed/effective power from being in the draft. This is a key feature on restrictor-plate ovals in NASCAR and other races/events where the cars hit an aero-limit. There is still an aero benefit to the leading car from having someone in their drafting wake if they are close enough as it causes the airflow to detach earlier from the lead car and pass clean over the trailing car, reducing overall drag (the trailing car gets a big bonus, the lead car gets a very small bonus). If they are too far apart the trailing car still gets the bonus of travelling through the disrupted turbulent air of the leading car but the leader doesn’t get the bonus of the detached airflow. The downside to bump-drafting (or upside if you’re not team-mates) is that it can lead to the leading car spinning out if the bump is too harsh, as the airflow detaching earlier means it doesn’t flow over the back of the car, significantly reducing rear grip

Drafting benefits the drafter and drafted so both cars have an advantage over cars that aren’t drafting. So yeah it is kinda fair that both cars get dirty laps from it.

Well … if the game is being true to actual racing physics … then you are getting help from behind. Is it fair to others to have to try and match your aided speeds if they’re truly alone on the track without the aids that you’re getting?
