Damping

So, I’ve tuned some decent rides but at times am utterly confused on what I’m doing to the car. I know damping is going to control how fast the tires retract into the wheel well, but I would like to know how this affects the stress on the tires, it seems like the stiffer your damping is the faster my turn in response is also. Basically, what are the benefits of running a stiffer damping over a softer damping and vice versa? thank you.
