I’ve found there’s some personal preference in car setup for drifting, and I’ve done better by making some different choices to what is often advocated.
First of all, I prefer AWD to RWD. Purists may sneer, but you can adjust the balance between front and rear wheel power to get the balance spot on. If it’s tending to rotate too much, make the split a bit more towards the front wheels. If it’s tending to grip and stop drifting, move it more towards the back wheels.
I’ve often seen it advised to not use rear aero for drifting but I’ve found the right amount of rear wing can really stabilise the car and help to keep it at the right angle.
I’ve also often seen it advised to use less grippy tyres, but I find this depends on the specific drift zone. To drift fast around a tight bend you need grippy tyres, as less grippy tyres will tend to make the car keep going in a straight line rather than following the bend. But some drift zones are straighter and benefit from less grippy tyres as you want the car to NOT change its direction of travel in that scenario.
I’ve also done better with some of my own tunes than with downloaded drift tunes, even though the tunes were from well respected people. E.g. I tuned a Cayenne Turbo for Forzathon Live, and tweaked the power more towards the back wheels so it would be okay for drifting, and I just happened to hit a great sweet spot for balance with that car and it’s great for drifting. If I move the power even more towards the back wheels it rotates too much, it was just luck that what I thought was compromise tuning for Forzathon Live happened to hit the right balance for that car.
I should say I’m far from the greatest drifter around, but I have managed to get 3 stars on all the zones in FH4, and some top <5% placings on the leaderboards.
Skinny tires. Related to the less grippy tire discussion above. Cars that start out with less grip have more drift point potential than supercars no matter how pretty you drift in a supercar.
And when drifting on dirt and especially uphill, you need enough power to keep momentum up. I pay no attention to class PI limits when building a drift car.
I cannot get a single “Awsome Drift” skill in my Monster Ralky car. Ive tried every surface, tire, Awd, Rwd. I even bought the Forza Edition Renault 5 Turbo w/ drift suspension. All i get is drift, drift, drift, great drift, etc. Ive even gotten up too 150+MPH and thrown my cars sideways across an entire field w/ steering wheel locked & spinning the tires and best i get is great drift!!! Can anybody help me PLEASE!? This is so frustrating!!!
OT im very dissapointed that pg have made that lake so bad to drive, driving in lake in winter dont feel like that and dont have that mutch water until spring where is to close at that point you cant even drive on there anymore. And that they havent use that lake in any way other than one drag strip would be so nice to have ice track, that would be so fun to drive with rally cars or drifting around but no and they dont even let us make own ice track because cant use route creator on drag stips.
Also, if you’re not already using manual transmission then switching it to manual and keeping it in 2nd or 3rd can help. But I took my Rally Monster to the lake for all the required Ultimate Drifts, too. Of course, I also adjusted the differential so it was 90% rear.
I have awd opel manta tune shared, it’s made for rally but i get awesome and ultimate drifts with that one pretty easily gets abaout 200km/h speed before corner and then pull handbrake (really pull not just tap) then gas pedal down and can get awesome drift.
@abell 370 yeah class limits are pretty useless when building drift cars. One car that i found yesterday that is really fun to drift is ford fpv ute with rwd and v12 swap and winter tires, it have so mutch power that it’s lose traction really easy just pressing gas pedal and long gears make that dont need use other than 3rd and 4th gear so it was pretty easy with manual gears.
Find a farm field with slighly rolling hills. Run along the side, tap the e-break and let the drift begin.
That’s really how I completed the challenge. Got more room for longer drifts, not a whole lot to bump into and Monster Rally cars really do drift great in grass or on snow. You don’t need a hillside, they just help in keeping the drift alive longer. I think I did it in a Lancia, but not sure. The very first dirt car you get, which I believe is the Lancia. Didn’t even change the tune, it’s still tuned for dirt.
1st, bad news for you is you need ultimate drifts…
2nd, you don’t need to hold your drift around a corner or go Fast into a drift to get an ultimate drift. It’s really easy if you just go to a wide open area and initiate a drift and just hold it in a wide circle. You should be able to basically hold it in a circle forever if you wanted, it’s not hard. Just do this a couple times and you’ll have it.
I’m not a great drifter and I did it on the sand near the castle. I was in 3rd gear (manual) and kept the speed up for a long drawn out drift on a large arc.
