Hey everyone, when driving the caddy limo from the new car pack (in automatic) I thought something about the acceleration was odd - however as a non-driver in real life, I wanted to check it with some peeps who have a better background knowledge of cars than I do
After being thoroughly amused at the idea of gunning a limo down the mulsanne straight on the old le mans track, I managed to hit 5th gear - I assumed that the max speed would be reached and the revs top out and stay constant like on other vehicles… however with the limo at 5th gear the engine seems to really struggle and the speed actually starts to decrease - and continues to do so whilst 5th gear and the throttle is maintained. If you then slow down enough for the gears to go back into 4th, the acceleration climbs up as normal until you then hit 5th, rinse and repeat.
Is this correct for a car of this size/type? I can imagine that not many people who have driven a limo in real life have got it into 5th gear too often…
Cheers Uber. The odd thing is, this is at stock - I hadn’t altered it at all - so if the stock car that comes in the DLC is setup so that 5th gear doesn’t work properly, why include a 5th gear in the first place? Why not just leave it at 4th. Maybe I am missing the point? (lol) but it seems strange to have a car with a gear setting that you have to avoid or tune it yourself to get it to be worth using.
5th is like an over drive, besides no one in real life hauls butt down LeMans,or anywhere really in a limo!! I doubt in real life if anyone gets a limo into 5th gear under normal driving!!
Most normal passenger cars have what are called “overdrive” ratios in their higher gears. This means that the car reaches its maximum speed in a lower gear, and the taller high gear allows the engine to operate at reduced RPMs when cruising down the highway, thus providing better fuel economy and engine life.
So the short answer is that yes, that is correct behavior for the car.
Yep, basically 5th gear an overdrive gear used for better fuel economy and engine life but since it’s a geared really tall (lower number in the gear tuning menu), the engine’s revs drop low enough so that the engine isn’t producing enough power to accelerate the car or even maintain a constant speed due to drag. This isn’t a problem in real life where the max that limo is ever likely to see is probably 75 mph.
The Limo isn’t alone in the realm of stock vehicles whose top speed isn’t in their highest transmission gear. The C6 Corvette Z06 reaches it’s top speed in 5th gear on a 6 speed transmission. There’s more to gearing that just reaching top speed. As others have said fuel economy plays a big part.
Every real world Limo driver uses 5th gear all the time. It probably shifts into 5th gear at any speed over 40 give or take 5 MPH if you are just cruising a long at constant speed.
