Brief review of TX with FM5

Guys, if you’re so gloriously happy with your wheels, feel free to post your own reviews in counterpoint. This review is just my opinion, and anyone reading it is going to take it as exactly that.

A while back Rex asked me to let him know what I thought of the wheel, particularly in comparison to my previous Fanatec, and I did just that. Since it was first mooted last year, every article, video and comment about the TX wheel that I have seen has either been lazily recycled promotional material , brief, gushing endorsements by proud owners (as well as shills), bitter complaints regarding premature failure, exasperation with Thrustmaster production and marketing, or Darin. Google ‘Thrustmaster TX’ and tell me I’m wrong. I thought there might be more useful and informative commentary to be had, so I placed the review in the open forum rather than PMs.

There’s really no need for anyone to feel defensive or anxious that I am putting off potential buyers. The fact is that the wheel is not glorious, it’s just a wheel like many other wheels before it. Most of the story around it has been repeated time and again in the past. It costs more than it should, it isn’t as reliable as it should be, it doesn’t work as well as it ought, and is indifferently supported by the game. There’s really no news there. At no point did I say that I disliked it. It’s a toy wheel, and all toy wheels are like this.

Sorry i got you into this mess,Mick. All the problems people are having with FFB and vibration in the game should have been fixed by the update TM posted on their thread ages ago,it was also to fix DOR defaulting to 900 everytime you turned it off, this update has never happened! By the way this was a T10 FM5 update, not TMs.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and thank you WearyMick for taking the time to write down your experiences and view of the TX. It will differ from others but that is natural.

Whilst I don’t agree with some of your points (I’m not going to go into specifics), as a TX and Fanatec CSR user I definitely prefer using the TX with my Fanatec pedals in FM5 over the CSR in FM4 (I still play both games just as much). A lot of my gripes are not all with the wheel, they are mainly down to the T10. FM5 game (known bugs are continually not being addressed) as my experiences using the TX on the PC are ‘unbelievably’ good.

i don’t think that someone reading this review will be put off purchasing the wheel, it is more likely the known reliability issues that do this (I’m on my second wheel base).

My Rig:
Thrustmaster TX
GTE and F1 Rims
CPX adapter
Fanatec CSP’s
WheelStandPro

WearyMick, I don`t think anyone here is defensive or anything.
Some of us just pointed out that you seem to attribute a lot of issues to the wheel which are actually caused by Forza.

I am sorry you are not happy with your racing setup, that sucks, its a lot of money. But you shouldnt blame the TX unless you had enough experience with it to discern between game and wheel, and you shouldnt lightly dismiss the feedback from people who had that experience already. Well, of course its up to you entirely, blame who you want.
Still, my well-meant advise would be not to be pissed about what you think was a rather bad purchase, but wait until you have the chance to try it under better circumstances.
For me, with the right game, the TX gives the best wheel-racing experience I ever had.

I like mine. I think a couple of your points are a little over the top, but the thing people should take from this is that each person experiences things relative to their own experiences. The only problem I’ve had with mine is the random “look behind” button not working in online lobbies. Other than that, I love it. I have absolutely no interest in getting a MadCatz wheel and only intend on getting the F1 wheel upgrade. The force feedback is good at 70% at 270 degrees rotation. Not overpowering at all. Other than that, great wheel. No major issues. My Microsoft wheel had an issue with the FFB reacting weird and staying locked until a transfer in car weight or bump to suspension sorted it out. Nothing like that with the TX.

Great write up though Mick, thanks for taking the time to give your opinions of your experience!

Go use it on a PC, then give a proper review. Issues that happen with FM5 don’t happen on PC. It’s nite and day. That’s why some here don’t necessarily agree with the review you did. Who knows, maybe Turn 10 fixes game issues on vibration & ffb with August free Infinity car pack with mandatory update.

Like I said before, I really can’t wait to use it on Project Cars & see if they do a better job getting the wheel to perform like it does on PC.
