Now that we can fine tune the gear ratios of stock transmitions I’m wondering if, on cars that going to a race trans is a big PI increase, if people aren’t upgrading to race transmitions on cars they otherwise would have, or is the decreased shifting time alone still worth it?
A racing gearbox allows you to adjust each gear separately. This means you can do stuff like put your low gears closer together for better gear choices for cornering or your high gears closer together for more acceleration at high speeds. like when you are on the freeways
A setup I like is a long first gear cause I only use that when taking off from standstill and then I can have the my driving gears closer together for better overall responsiveness.
Hope this gives you some ideas for experimentation.
You can’t fine tune the gear ratios of stock transmissions.
If each individual gear is adjustable then the car either comes with a race transmission or one has been installed.
If the final drive is adjustable then either it is one of the handful of cars that has a stock transmission that comes with adjustable final drive, or a drivetrain swap has happened or a sport transmission has been added.
So are adjustable gears worth it? On some cars yes and on others no.
I am not sure if you were looking for a “proforma” answer but I decide for each individual car if it needs different gearing from stock and upgrade accordingly.
Keep in mind not all cars take a huge hit in the performance index with a race transmission. Some cars dont increase much and some cars actually decrease when you install a race transmission. It pays to check.
I only use the race transmission if it provides a clear advantage or I have upgraded the engine a lot.
I use a street trans in many older cars that have 4 speed transmissions, the street trans will give you 5th gear and often increase your top speed and acceleration.
And, if you feel you need to adjust the final drive, the sport trans is the way to go. For example, the Jag F-Type has 8 gears. You only use 5 of them in the stock setup. If you put in the sport transmission and adjust the final drive, you can make use of all 8 gears. Or 7, or 6, if you prefer. It all depends on your Final Drive.
In many instances, the stock transmission works fine and leaves you PI for other upgrades.
Edit: I drive manual w/clutch, so the increases in shift speed mean nothing to me and my advice comes from that perspective. If you use auto or manual, a race transmission or clutch upgrade can quicken your shift times, but manual w/clutch can shift as fast as you can press the buttons so you don’t need those upgrades.
The upgrades do help when using manual with clutch, but it is much less than the posted time. It is necessary when building a high class car but not so much in anything under S1 really.
Also, the race transmission offers the largest benefit when you want to control how often you shift or where your car sits in the power band. Every shift you have to make will cost you a little bit of time, and it is much quicker to drive through a corner in one gear than to have to shift two or three times in the same amount of space. I would say it depends on the environment you are looking to compete in and the car class.
I thought people knew this, my bad. If you buy the race trans and then tune your gears then reinstall the stock for some reason the ratios stay (you may have to change a 6 or 7 gear to a 5 though) which is why I asked if decreased shift times alone were worth the PI increase.
This pretty much sums up how sad the gaming community is these days.
I am not having a got at you TheBadJesus.
But the assumption that everyone knows about this glitch and the assumption that everyone uses it just shows how sad the gaming community is in my opinion.
No we do not all look for glitches and use them.
If people use clutch (control setting) there is no gain from decrease shift times from the clutch upgrade so I don’t even look at the decrease shift times.
Only time I use a clutch is if I can see I can fit one in without going over my PI limit after having tried every other option. In FH2 it seems there are combinations where the clutch can sneak in where other parts can’t.
It should reset back to default as soon as you enter a race. Though to answer your question, the increase in shift time alone is probably not worth it.
The difference in shift-times is indeed minor. Yet, some people and their driving-style (controller or wheel) absolutely benefit from a race-transmission as such.
Personally, I only use these transmissions to make sure every upshift drops back to the same powerband. If the engine has got a wide band, the stock transmission is enough.
I think the race trans is very useful update in this game, not just to keep the gears in the engines power band, but also to create realistic gearboxes in both 4 and 5-speed cars, stock gearboxes in this game is far from how they really are in real life.
If you are aiming to come up with the quickest build race transmissions are not very useful (Read Worms post).
If you have other goals then maybe.
To test mention a car where you htink raced transmission is useful and we can have a build off.
The rules would be build 1 - stock car, race transmission as only upgrade, gears can be tuned.
Build 2 - same PI as option 1 - upgrades allowed are any transmission, weight reduction or power upgrades. No tuning other than gears.
See which car is quicker.
This may still miss the point though because the 20 or so PI difference between street transmission and race can be very useful on a car with properly tuned suspension etc
It also depends very much on the car and your ultimate goal. Typically, I use the race transmissions on S2 and X class cars OR if I really, really, really, need to change the gearing.
For me it depends on how much PI it adds vs how much of an improvement I can get out of 0-60, 0-100, or Top Speed. Some cars have the PI jump up 6 or 7 points for not much gain, and vice versa
I’m starting to start experimenting without Race Brakes to see how it works. I have to get used to not having higher brake pressure, but I think I’ll survive and get the extra PI point or two in with other upgrades.
