Probably the best Corvette until the C6 ZR1, the C2 Grand Sport was a true race car. Built to rival the Cobras dominating the American courses in the early 60s, it was a skunkworks project conducted by the GM execs’ backs. When the suits found out, they cancelled the project after only 5 cars had been made, 2 roadsters and 3 coupes. The best engine in the Grand Sport was the 377 ci V8, developing 550 hp. It did win a race in 1963, but with no factory support and an unfavorable rules situation, the C2 Grand Sport never achieved the success it could have been capable of. Chevy certainly had the driving talent, with the likes of Roger Penske and AJ Foyt racing the Grand Sport. Who knows, maybe Chevy would have been at Le Mans a couple of years later, either in place of or together with Ford, if they had been able to compete with the Cobras…
